I propose an interesting idea..

Hello,

My name is Bruce. I joined this forum in order to post this topic. I would love to hear your thoughts.

First of all, I've always considered myself a closet athiest. Meaning, I do not believe in god.. I am pro evolution and natural selection, but announcing myself as an athiest would give me a negative image with my peers. Specifically at work, most of my co-workers are very religious, and I avoid religious discussions so I don't offend anyone.

I ask this question: Should suicide be legal?

I believe suicide should be legal. For one thing, you can't punish anyone for suicide, so outlawing it makes no sense. Two, how is it possible that we can't choose to end our own life, yet we can choose to end the life of an unborn child? The benefits of legalizing suicide would be considerable. I also believe that all drugs should be legal and available for retail sale.

I will try to explain my theory. It's all based upon this "war on drugs" that President Bush declared. A war that we will never win, it's a war on our own citizens. It's a war on people who are making unhealthy decisions and causing harm to themselves. In my mind, there is no difference between extreme drug abuse and attempted suicide. If someone is injecting poison that has been proven to kill, that decision is up to that person. The drug dealer doesn't care if you do the drugs.

Imagine making every drug legal and readily available. Many people would be upset about it, but would they change their mind about doing drugs? Would a man who's never done heroin rush out to try it just because it is legal? I doubt it. He's educated on the reasons people shouldn't do it. The man who does drugs currently would probably think it's great at first. Now, drug user's are exposed as they ask for a needle of heroin from the gas station attendant. Marijuana is sold like cigarettes, and at far lower prices because it is now manufactured by large corporations like Marlboro. Millions of jobs are created within the drug, alcohol and tobacco industries. Millions of non-violent drug possession and trafficking crimes committed across the country simply do not happen. For-profit prisons across the country release all non-violent drug related inmates to their families. All drugs become cheaper, therefore more cash remains in everyone's pocket. We no longer fight wars with other countries over the import and export of drugs. With the absence of drug related crime, more government officials are available to assist in the rehabilitation of drug users who want to quit and need help. Police still patrol for people who operate motor vehicles while intoxicated.

I see many benefits of legalizing suicide, and the use of all drugs at your own choice. However, we'd need to focus more energy in the education of our youth, specifically in drug and drug abuse. If our children are aware of the consequences of drug use, and know that they can do it.. they are more likely to not use. I think drug use overall would decrease. People want to do what you tell them they can't. If we simply tell our kids "Yes, you can use drugs, but you are an idiot if you do.", and then of course explain why.. they are then given a choice to commit suicide, or attempt suicide. The point is, we need to strengthen our education system in drug use and suicide.

Suicide is something you can't stop. Nor will we ever stop the world from using illegal drugs. We should admit defeat to drugs, regulate them, and let those who want to harm themselves do so. We should stop fighting each other and start helping each other through education and mental support.

I could discuss this for a long time. I just wanted to propose the idea, and hear thoughts on it.
