I was watching Through the Wormhole and it was an episode on whether or not the universe was a living organism. So, I was wondering, what do the circumstances have to be for something be considered living?

This is like asking how high is UP. There are numerous variables and definitions based on what you are talking about. If you are sticking to just the universe (opp JUST?) Then the question is the same as how can a virus be dead if it is not considered life?

A virus is "dead" when it cannot perform its biochemical reactions anymore like a dead battery.

Is the universe living? the vacuum part of it as far as we know = NO

But if you look at the universe from a philosophical perspective then the answer is that it is flowing with life.
