Could it all go down the flush sometime soonish? Well, it's possible.
I have a certain perspective, as a student of history; also because my parents were Depression-era farmkids.
We've had disasters and hard times before, some of them quite drastic; some took out a substantial chunk of the world's population.
Here's a partial list...
The collapse of the Roman Empire, followed by the Dark Ages. Chaos, ignorance, warlords, robber barons, cities fall, trade all but ceases. Vast knowlege is all but lost.
The Black Death (Bubonic plague). Some estimates say a third of the world died of this.
The Hundred Years War.... literally, a hundred years of war in Europe... can you imagine a hundred years of all-but continuous war? Not far away, but on your doorstep, in your town, burning your house?
World War One
The 1918-1919 Swine Flu.... bad enough that it has as much to do with bringing WW1 to a halt as anything political or military.
The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl. Worldwide financial collapse. American mothers deciding which child to feed and which to let starve.
World War Two... don't take it for granted, THINK about it. A homicidal madman takes over Europe and wants to enslave the world... millions upon millions die... A brutal Empire conquers Asia... ending with the first atomic bombs and the Cold War with the USSR, generations who grew up with the nuclear Sword of Damocles hanging over their head.
I don't doubt for a moment that we could very well be headed into hard times, possibly even another major disaster... possibly world-changing events.
Or not. I freedly admit I don't know and have no time scale or predictions to offer.... and I doubt anyone who claims they DO "know" anything with any certainty.
