What is your personal philosophical lifestyle?

About 10 years ago I decided that I should have a very specific philosophy in life so that I would be able to define success on my own terms. Of course, 10 years ago I wasn't nearly as qualified as I am now to discern between success and failure, but I think I did pretty damn good for my age at the time. The following is my personal philosophy: leave the world a better place than it would have been without me.

About 5 years after that I cut my philosophy down to make it more relevant to everyday life - each action and inaction has repercussions that are positive and negative. I try to be aware of who my actions impact and how they impact others. Many actions have negative consequences, but if they are outweighed by positive consequences then they can be justified.

You can't always make the right decision and we are all prone to justifying our own selfish actions. This is no excuse for those who do not try.

"Don't be a douche"

I think that covers just about every moral choice one could ever face.

On reflection I guess I'm more conformist than histrionic

Oops :doh

I'm not seeing a "Nihilistic Individualist Isolationist Misanthrope" choice.

That's just 'cause you're too special to be squeezed into a category.

I'm not special. I wish I was. Then I could cross out the Nihilism part :2razz:

I'm more of an individualist, as I've grown into myself much more over the past two years. I much more confident in my decision-making, sense of self and my direction. But I've always had individualist strains, even since I was a kid. I've never needed the same amount of approval from groups as others have; I can make a relatively unpopular choice and stick with it out of my own sense of self-righteousness, for lack of a better term.

But I do identify with Pach's "don't be a douche" motto. I may be strong-willed and elf-sufficient, but I also have strong morals and and attraction to right and wrong, even though it's my own moral code. I hate rudeness, boorishness and self benefit at the expense of others. So I guess I'm also a somewhat of a moraliser.

Hedonistic: Your actions are based mainly on personal pleasure (power, money, etc.)

Affectionate: Your actions are based on helping those you love

Individualist: Your actions are based on standing alone, but not to gain attention

Pretty much these.

I'm just wondering how you people live your lives. These are terms I created to describe such behaviors.

Hedonistic: Your actions are based mainly on personal pleasure (power, money, etc.)

Conformist: Your actions are based mainly on conforming to society's goals and expectations

Histrionic: Your actions are based on gaining attention

Obedient: Your actions are based on conforming to your government's goals and expectations

Affectionate: Your actions are based on helping those you love

Goodwill: Your actions are based on helping everybody out of a feeling of goodwill towards everybody around you

Moralist: Your actions are based on your religion/morals

Disobedient: Your actions are based on thwarting the ruling class

Individualist: Your actions are based on standing alone, but not to gain attention

I am all of em and I am none of em. What I am depends entirely on the situation. One moment I am a conformist, the next I am an anarchist and then I am individualist. So on and so forth.

They all have their appropriate times to exist.

I'm mostly driven by Affection and Goodwill, though I have a Moralist streak that colors how I implement my affection and goodwill.

That's how I feel too. I'm like a yo-yo. LOL!
