For example our intuition tells us there is a past that was a now that is and a future that will be.
It tells us that in the world there are definate objects that are distinct
It tells us that that the world is causally determined

Are these faculties reliable?

My gut says no.

That is a meaningless question. If you can't trust those faculties as being real, you can't trust that this forum or the people on it even exist. Simply by asking the question, you are making inherent assupmtions about the nature of reality.

They are probably more reliable in some, than in others. My MO with intuitions is to trust, but verify. ;)

My intuition is rarely off base.

I rely heavily on my intuition. I do a logic check sometimes because there are certain situations that can compromise my intuition to some degree. And those are the moments in my life where I feel crippled - as though I've suddenly gone blind. My gut is usually very accurate, but that is not to say I always listen to it.

I tend to be very intuitive when fixing problems or troubleshooting situations in everything from computers to relationships. It serves me well, but I don't pretend its not just fast processing going on in the back of my mind.

I think intuition is a powerful instinct that's been ingrained in our lil' selves through evolution. We should always pay close attention to it, as it is rarely wrong.

You get this from intuition? I get such data from my five senses.

"Intuition" to me is the sensation of an immediate nature about a conclusion that I couldn't explain having reached. Like, I suddenly feel I ought to cross the street whilst walking for safety, but couldn't tell you why. And yes, I try to cultivate and I most certainly do trust it.

My ability to be intuitive has gone down markedly over the years. When I was young and highly desirable for a whole raft of criminal purposes, I also lived in far more dangerous surroundings. I think I had my "radar" on virtually non-stop.

These days, I feel very safe in my surroundings, and have acquired the invisibility of an older lady, so that I can run errands in my pyjamas if I like and no one even notices. I'd say it's a rare day indeed when anything trips my radar on -- so I think it may be a "use it or lose it" ability.

You may be onto something, but I'm not sure it's a use it or lose it ability, as much as a pay attention to it thing- at least for me that seems to be the case. Maybe when you feel secure, you feel that you need it. I personally pay attention to it no matter what, because it's brought me some excellent problem-solving endeavors (mental and emotional), especially since I've gotten to my older years.

I'm not surprised to hear this, lizzie -- more'n one friend my age has said they nagged their spouse or parent to see the doctor without knowing why, and it turned out to be just in time.

ALl your 5 senses give you are sense data, its your intuition that turns it into a coherant story.

Maybe intuition is the wrong word, I'm talking about a more kind of epistemological question, far more basic intuitions than just feelings of something being right, I'm talking more about our intuition about time, reality, causality and so on.

I'm not making any assumptions, I'm just asking the question ... lots of science from relativity to quantum physics says that perhaps our faculties are NOT reliable.
