Anyone been to Belize?

If so, did you visit Mayan ruins? If so, was a tour guide *required*?

Where did you go/what did you do? If you don't mind me asking. I think my BF and I have decided on going to Belize in Oct. Trying to put together a trip now.

I haven't been to Belize, but my dad lived on Caye Caulker for awhile, about ten years ago.
He said it was pretty cool.
He did visit some ruins while he was there, but I think they were actually in Guatamala, not Belize. I'm also not sure if they were Mayan or what. He sent pictures of himself climbing pyramids. Did not specify whether they were Mayan, Inca, Aztec or what.
He did not have a guide, he traveled all over Guatamala by himself, but he's fluent in Spanish, so if you're not, maybe you should have a guide. Or perhaps you don't need one, I don't know.
In Belize, most people spoke English, according to him, so if there are ruins there and you want to see them, I don't imagine you'd need a guide. You could probably just go there by yourself.

Re: Anyone been to Belize?

Hmm... Yeah, I'd much rather go without a guide. I'm not big on tour guides and tour groups, I'm more of a "do it myself" kinda gal. I don't like being bound by what the GROUP is doing, and since I study ancient civilizations/history as a 'hobby', I don't think there's anything a guide could tell me that I haven't already read.

But, the place we're booking our hotel, diving, zipline, etc with wants to book a Mayan ruin thing for us too for like $175 or some such. I mean... Really? I should pay someone to walk in front of me to a Mayan ruin? Nah.

I was just wondering, though, if they were somehow regulated so that you weren't allowed there without a guide. Or, if they were that hard to find that you needed a guide, etc. Sounds like they're probably neither.
