Witnesses: Canada bus passenger beheads seat mate

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba - Passengers aboard a Canadian bus fled in horror as a fellow traveler viciously attacked his seat mate, repeatedly stabbing him and then severing his head, witnesses said Thursday.

Police said a 40-year-old man was arrested after the grisly attack late Wednesday night aboard a Greyhound bus en route from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

But passenger Garnet Caton said the victim, who appeared to be about 19, was sleeping with headphones on when his seat mate suddenly began stabbing him as the bus traveled a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway, a dozen miles from Portage La Prairie.

Caton said the driver stopped the bus when he became aware of the attack and passengers scrambled off. A short while later, Caton said he re-boarded along with the bus driver and a trucker who had stopped to see what was happening.

He said the suspect had the victim on the floor of the bus and "was cutting his head off" with a large hunting knife.

"When he was attacking him, he was calm," said Caton. "There was no rage or, or anything. He was just like a robot stabbing the guy."

Holy cow! Would this be bus rage? Canadians are such nice people...and now this happens. I've never heard of something this horribble taking place on Greyhound (and Greyhound would certainly be the place for something like that to happen...have you seen who rides Greyhound?).

In what may or may not be a related story (if free speech is determined to be illegal in Canada we may never know if this is germane or not), the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal (BCHRT) decision is currently pending in the case of alleged exposure of Muslims to contempt by Canada's Maclean's Magazine.

For whatever reason, gruesome stories fascinate me, but they upset me as well. I am regretting that I read the article because the description of what happened is just so horrific that I can't get the images out of my mind.

Were there lots of passengers on the bus? Seems like a group of people should have been able to take down a guy with a knife. Sad.

I'm surprised the guy wasn't killed on the spot. How do three men guard the door with a CROWBAR no less while this guy sits on a bus and dismembers a body?

What the hell happened to men? How long does it take to saw someone's head off with a knife? Frankly I think it's shameful this guy wasn't taken out on the spot.

The bus driver pulled over on a section of the east-bound Trans-Canada Highway -- about 15 kilometres west of Portage la Prairie -- and many of the 37 passengers began to flee the bus.

Caton gathered a small group of people to go back and help the victim, said CTV correspondent Murray Oliver in Winnipeg.

"They returned to the back of the bus to find that the person who was stabbing the person in the neck had now sawed off the head of (the victim)."

The man, with the head in one hand and the knife in the other, then tried to attack the other passengers, said Oliver.

The group was able to exit the bus and slammed the door behind them.

The man then stabbed the door with his knife but was unable to break through and get off the bus. Eventually, he attempted to start up the bus to drive away but the operator had hit a switch, disabling the vehicle.

Oliver said a truck driver then arrived at the scene and handed out wrenches and crowbars to several men. The small group gathered around the door to the bus and prevented the man from exiting until police arrived.

Cody Olmstead, a Nova Scotia man who was on the bus, said that the killer taunted the men who were blocking the door from the outside.

"He cut (the victim's) head off and then walked up to the door holding it and just looked at them crazy-like and then dropped the head and walked back to the body and started cutting it some more," Olmstead told CTV News from outside a hotel in Brandon, Man., where he and other passengers were taken.

The man was left alone with the body and witnesses say that he performed further indignities to the victim.

"We have word from people on the scene . . . that when the killer was alone with the body . . . that there may have been some small acts of cannibalism on the body," Oliver said.

They described the guy as being calm throughout the whole thing. It sounds like the attack was unprovoked. I think he had a psychotic break. At least I hope that's what happened because this behavior is just grostesque.

Apparently the guy was a pretty quiet person. Not somebody you'd expect this from. Pretty crazy story.
