Jerry Lewis may have the most awkward interview of the year when he recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his illustrious career. He was asked: "Have you ever thought about retiring?" The 90-year-old then asked: "Why?" The King of Comedy actor was difficult to say the least with Hollywood trade magazine, which forced author Andy Lewis to title the article

Even though Mr Lewis raised millions for Muscular Dystrophy and also entertained many I always felt he had this nasty side to him. One has to give him a little leeway because he is 90 but damn he just comes down like a jerk in this interview.

I feel like we must have missed something behind the scenes that got him pissed off. Otherwise why allow them to come for the interview in the first place?

Agreed. And I'm not sure that if I were a performer currently on tour--as he said he was--I would want someone asking me when I planned to quit. That's more the kind of question, it seems to me, to ask someone when he's at home, relaxed, and not working at the time. He was, in a civil way, telling the interviewer to go to hell, and he may have felt insulted by his questions. It's just possible Lewis had made clear beforehand he didn't want to be asked about his age, retiring, etc.--we don't know.

The Hollywood Reporter shouldn't have released the interview to the public in my opinion. Lewis has spent his life making people laugh and raising money for charity and he had a bad day like we all do, only he's dealing with the additional challenges of being a 90 year old. They could have had a little class and a little mercy on Jerry, but why do that when you can get everyone talking about your publication?

He has nothing to prove anymore but I also think any interviewer should do some basic research on their potential interviewee and my feeling is this one didn't and just irritated Jerry with repeated questions about his age which seemed to imply he was past it / weak headed.

I watched the interview on Monday at the Hollywood Reporter and also followed a couple of links. Here is what the LA Times had to say, and the article includes a vid clip:

The infamously ornery comic’s extremely awkward new interview with the Hollywood Reporter has gone viral due to Lewis’ testy answers and obvious disinterest. Earlier this year, Lewis sat down with The Times’ Mark Olsen for a somewhat friendlier chat, on the eve of the release of "Max Rose," Lewis’ first starring role in more than two decades. Despite admitting to being difficult, Lewis gave thoughtful answers to some questions — in between death stares. Here's what happens when Jerry Lewis isn't so hostile in an interview - LA Times

My father had to work with Lewis every year and detested him. He would never say a word except "asshole," but after watching the Hollywood Reporter interview, I finally understood why and sent the link to my little sister. So that's why. What an ass.

I seem to recall that Lewis broke with MD years ago because he was an asshole.

It makes no difference what he has done or how old he is - an asshole is an asshole - and he deserves the exposure.

I was never a Jerry Lewis fan, I never found him funny. I like sitcoms and comedy, but I never liked the slapstick comedy of Lewis, the 3 stooges, Jim Carrey, etc. Personal preference I guess.

Anyway I've heard many times over the decades that Lewis was kind of an asshole.

Lewis has done so much good for so many people, I will not criticize his own human personality flaws.

I did some research and you guys are right, Jerry Lewis is an asshole!

"3. Money Raised: According to the MDA, the telethon raised nearly $2 billion over the years."

What happened to the Jerry Lewis Labor Day MDA Telethon, and 7 facts about the former TV staple | OregonLive.com

Your article discusses the big appearance by Sinatra and his bringing Dean Martin on stage with him. I remember watching that as it happened. A great moment for all three men and more importantly - helped a great cause.

Absolutely!

So the guys ornery from time to time, he's made billions laugh and raised billions for charity.

Exactly. We all have our foibles and our bad days and the guy is getting older and has health problems so a little understanding might go a long way.

DeNiro gives him lots of credit for teaching him how to do comedic acting - which he admits is a lot harder than teaching a comedian to do drama.

I remember when Lewis did drama - his several appearances as a clothing manufacturer on WISE GUY and he was terrific. There is a good documentary on him that shows how he was obsessed with details in his films and worked his butt off to get everything right.

Yeah, that "asshole" raised 2.7 BILLION dollars for MD. What a joik.

But you do have a point, an asshole is an asshole. ;) ;)

He seemed perfectly amiable in this interview just three months ago.

I suspect He relates retiring to dying, and took the question as, "have you thought about dying?"

Bet this wasn't the same reporter! I don't like how the last video done seems to put the blame onto Lewis - if anything, your video shows what can happen if the interviewer does some basic research and treats the interviewee with respect.

I too think there's more to this story. Perhaps his family arranged the interview and he didn't want to do it. Maybe there was an incident with the interviewer before the camera rolled. There are some drugs that can bring out a nasty side to seniors, Namenda being one of them. Or perhaps he is in the throes of senility and doesn't understand reality.

Unless one believes he's a psychopath, one should recognize this isn't normal behavior ... even for an asshole.

That's actually the point I was trying to convey. :)

Jerry has a very long reputation as a complete asshat and jerk, this solidifies it. I wonder if he still carries his little shag carpet around?

My first thought is "Sheesh,, This interviewer is an ass,,, peppering Lewis with stupid questions" After watching a second time,, I still feel the same way,,

It sounded to me like the interviewer was not really into the set,, And that made Lewis feel the same way..

I always found Lewis funny,,

As far as him being an ass... Maybe he hangs around this website too much.......

I don't even want to know how you knew that.

I had to Google it. ****.

Oh, that one is so obscure...even Gilbert Gottfried doesn't talk about it...(but he does talk about Danny Thomas's odd fetishes)

Actually, the interview was one where the interviewer's questions would not air (they would be dubbed in later), and they were trying to get something they could actually work with. Note, Dick Van Dyke, Betty White, Chloris Leachman..etc...they had no problems with this, and they all did a professional job.

Jerry is a jerk, frequently on the telethons he would scream at the band members and berate people while on air, in between his maudlin late night whines.

A good synopsis of this kerfuffle is here: News From ME - Mark Evanier's BlogNews From ME

I hate you.

Every time we get into a conversation and I have to Google your insinuations, I wind up shaking my head.

Stop that ****. Cripe.
