A very close friend of mine passed away recently. I'm expecting her conservator will want me to say a few words. Am wondering what would be appropriate to say to the audience other than, "She was a kind and gentle soul, generous to a fault." How about a brief history of our friendship? Am not expecting a whole lot of people at the services.

Have been to a number of funerals. The one ingredient that I have observed that speakers have used that people so much appreciated was a little humor.

The humor seemed to allow everyone to exhale in such a sometimes painful emotional event. Am not suggesting anything like a priest, a rabbi and a preacher type humor but something concerning the deceased.

An example was at a physician's funeral when his son spoke. The physician had this habit of doing a sigh when frustrated so when the son told a story about him and his father and did the sigh everyone erupted into laughter. It was very helpful for the people there to allow them to relax a little.
