Admiral: If Batman had a ship, it would be Zumwalt

If Batman had a warship, it would be the USS Zumwalt.

That's how Adm. Harry Harris, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, described the Navy's largest and most sophisticated new destroyer, which comes with a price tag of at least $4.4 billion.

And now for the real reason I started this thread...

Weighing nearly 15,000 tons, the ship's advanced technology and capabilities allow it a range of defensive and offensive missions to project power, wherever it is needed. Capt. James Kirk, commanding officer of the Zumwalt...

Kirk rolls with questions about his sharing the first and last name of the fictional captain of the Starship Enterprise, telling reporters to "live long and prosper." But he says his parents named him after his grandfather, not Capt. James T. Kirk of "Star Trek."

"I have interrogated them about this a great deal — more over the last couple of years than before — and they tell me, no, it was all about my grandfather," Kirk says.

Pretty impressive ship. Just hope no Klingon or Romulan ever sink it. Cost a bunch of dollars.

Zumwalt is the first hull delivered in the $22 billion, three-ship class. The second and third ships — Michael Moonsor (DDG-1001) and Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG-1002) – are currently under construction at BIW.

At this price tag we lose the next big one. Our enemies will overwhelm us with numbers, because they build really good stuff for a fraction of what our stuff costs.

Pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that we Americans decided that we did not need stuff as good as the NAZI's had, because we had the ability to make more copies of OK stuff faster than anyone had ever imagined.

Who won that war?

Numbers win.

So is it batman or star trek, you can't go mixing universes like that

What is the cost overrun on this boat, anyone know?

It has got to be big.

The Zumwalt class is a really cool concept for a ship, but it has not proven itself. Lots of questions yet.

See, this is why you should know a bit about something before spouting off. Originally, the plan was for 32 Zumwalt class ships. That was reduced down to 3. At 32, the cost would have been 3 to 4 billion apiece, which is not bad. The problem is not the cost, but that, to save a little, the number of hulls was drastically reduced, raising the total cost per hull.

You have presented no information of which I was not aware.

The response for "live long and prosper" is, "Peace and long life." Just in case you ever wondered what it may be, now you know. with of course giving the Vulcan hand sign at the same time \\//, --

I certainly hopr that a middle power like Iran or China cannot take it out with one missile.

I certainly hope it does not sink if it loses power to the stabilizers.

It's a strange looking ship. Very streamlined. It does have kind of a Batman look to it...

Sure you can.

You can also mix other universes.

That would not be Batmans ship, it isn't black, it has too many people onboard, and it can't be converted into either a submarine or helicarrier.
