Jesse White Tumblers ... A group of young people coached by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. They do upwards of 1500 performances a year around the world. Have to keep a C average or better ... No drugs, no gangs, no alcohol no trouble. Or you're off the team. Kids as young as six can start in the program. And they get college scholarships anywhere from $5000 to $10,000 a year. They've been around since 1959, giving young men and women a chance to develop self-esteem and a purpose in life beyond the poverty and thug culture of their neighborhoods.

We saw them perform again yesterday. They are inspiring.

Their founder, Jesse White, was a teacher for irts years, a member of the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper. He does a fine job as Sec of State and is totally above the political fray. What a guy. I think he's in his late 70's now...

I threw my back out just watching that.

Sounds like a good program and those kids are great!

I fully support giving back to the community.
To bad quite a few people here don't.

I help support and volunteer a program here called Cafe Reconcile' that teaches at risk teens the culinary arts and restaurant management.
They learn valuable skills and I get first pick of trained highly motivated cooks and waiters.
Win-win.

This, I will attest:

When I was back in the city playing the politics game, Jesse White was one guy that was respected by all, even his political opponents. I never heard anyone speak poorly of him.

He also was a high achieving High School and College athlete, and did a stint with the Cub's farm team!

It was my great pleasure to have met him on several occasions back in the day, but I unfortunately never had the opportunity of a substantive conversation. But even in a brief "meet and shake hands" encounter, he had a way of making you feel he was genuinely focusing on you.

Greetings, MaggieD. :2wave:

Amazing group of young people! I don't recall that I was ever that limber - at any age! :lamo

Good for you.

The whole deal in the circle of life, is to "give back"!

Whenever my kids or a neighbor kid has thanked me for something I did for them, I immediately shout back:

"Pass it on, kid"!

The only way kids grow-up straight & strong, is when adults grab them by the scruff of their neck (lovingly - of course), and raise them straight and strong!

Contrary to their exteriors, I believe young men and women want an adult to take an interest in them in getting them on the right path, and it's our job to do it! ;)

I just looked up Mr. White - he's 82.
