Why I genuinely LIKE liberal hippie-types (no sarcasm)

Why I honestly LIKE liberal hippie types (no sarcasm)

I honestly like liberal hippie types for the following reasons. NO, I am NOT being sarcastic. I feel our government should be about 60 to 70% conservative, but the liberal hippie types have their place and role to fill and they do it well. Here is why.

1. Muckraking…Sometimes exposing an issue to the press is the only way it can be brought to the public’s attention.

2. Music…A good tune just can’t be beat, regardless of its message. “Eve of Destruction” & “Change the World” are just a few examples.

3. Hippie Chicks…Right up there in the sexiest chicks list. The long straight hair, long dresses, little leather purses, headbands, and light fluffy tops. God bless America.

4. Medical MJ…I hope one day to be able to take this for my constant chronic pain instead of the crap I have to take now that is slowly putting me in the grave. They are at the forefront of these efforts.

5. Art…some really outstandingly beautiful works of art are created by them.

Every society needs a balance of ideologies. They provide this.

I just wish the liberal hippie-types of today were as tough as the ones of the 60’s. Those guys took tear gas, redneck beatings, and all manner of other crap and came out on top. They did not need safe rooms, and were not “traumatized” and in pain when they read a campaign slogan from the opposition. They had much thicker skins and that is why their movement gave us a few things like personal computers, and the internet.

This is of course, just my own personal opinion and means as much as it cost you to read it. I just wanted to share it with you and seek your comments.

I may not agree with all your particular points, but I do agree with the over arching sentiment / thought, in which the left end of the political spectrum does have positive contributions to make.

It's just that they need to be convince them that many of their public policies are disasters just waiting to happen (not to say the right end of the political spectrum doesn't have their own disasters - they do).

Balance, Ying / Yang, this is the most important. Recent years the left has been yanking hard to the hard left. Time for a rebound back to more the middle.

A friend of mine on Facebook was just complaining about "hippie types" the other day (we were discussing Woodstock). He compared them to today's entitled youth.

Long story short, IMO, you're right and he's wrong.

Good morning, Moot! :2wave:

Excellent post!

Thank you, Polgara. 'I love like the smell of napalm in the morning.' lol

Let me add to this: In recent times, it seems to me that the more liberal bent - even if not quite hippy oriented - more truthfully respects the motto of "give me liberty or give me death."

Politicians like Trump gain ground saying, for example, that we should stop all muslim non-citizens from entry until we "sort this out" which could go on for however long a President wants. The more liberal side wants to see them admitted, albeit with proper security checks.

(To be fair, on the other hand, I have generally found conservatives on this and other sites more sympathetic than liberals to the importance of court's respecting the constitutional rights of accused/convicted criminals.)

Not to derail too far....but I think part of being a great country is not trading rights for safety. I think we've gone way too far towards safety, under both Bush and Obama. I think we need to be happier at running a higher risk of death in exchange for more protection from government surveillance and government searches.

Funny thing is... as a liberal, I have some beef with the hippy liberals. From my experience there are two types of hippies... One is an industrious, with-the-land kind of hard working hippy. I like those types. Then there's the lazy assed dope-smoking, don't get a job waste of flesh sitting there fulfilling all the stereotypes that drag liberals down. Not a fan.

Why I married one, still a cool woman, she is the artist, many of my fellow bikers did the same thing, yin and yang almost always works.

Something youth seems to have no knowledge of, they who tend to be determined to find themselves in a different sex before they can agree to mate.

Twits.

I think that all that stuff you like were from the 1960s hippies. Not sure that today's "liberal" hippie types deserve to be called liberal-they seem to be authoritarian fascists, wanting to regulate sex and a bunch of other private and liberal stuff. 60s hippies were anti-establishment. Today's "hippies" want to control the establishment and want the establishment to control society.

I find myself liking a lot of liberals on a personal level.
I don't agree with their politics, but some are really good people.

I am sad that I almost never saw any hippies, they did not come to Rockford Il, they were not welcome. I would see them in Chicago sometimes. I can still remember by dad often calling them " those God Damn hippies", he was offended. Only much later did I learn that my uncle was a radical on the UW Madison campus. THis is a guy who broke his leg to avoid Nam, he was no ***** (period appropriate term) .

Nice Thread. We can do more efforts to find common ground here at DP, these constant knife fights get a little old.

You are 100% correct.

I noticed few thread here were enjoyable to read. It seems they start off nice and digress to two or three people swapping insults at each other.

I was in my man cave listening to music, and that song, " Love Is Blue " came on. It came out in 1968, one of the most pinnacle years during the "hippie" era.

" Love Is Blue " to me, is a sweet and pleasant song that can take you away if you close your eyes and allow the issues of the day to fade.

With all the venom I was reading in these threads, I felt DP could use a dose of " Blue Love " from the 60's. Maybe to remind us all we are still Americans, and as Americans we are also citizens of the world.

My BFF is a woman, and pretty liberal on most things except shooting. She loves to shoot(my fault), but other than that, she is about as liberal and "hippie" as they come.

We became BFFs by both of us accepting and respecting the others opinions, and also seeking common ground.

That is why I thought it would be good to make a thread on why I like liberal hippie types.

Mutual respect is a good thing.

I recently had a member completely not understand why I would not open a dialog with them after two posts throwing insults my way, then not "getting it" as to why I refused to talk with them. They were completely clueless as to how to open a conversation.

Hawkeye, your description of "knife fights" was pretty accurate.

I like the hippy ethos, especially the creative and artisan side. There are some really amazing ones out there. Politically?... meh... lots of deadbeats and people who don't understand their own philosophy all that well. In my youth when I was learning about farming I did WWOOFing and met lots of hippies. I found that many espoused the virtues of living a life "off the grid" or "outside of the system", but in order to do so they had to ultimately rely on people and resources who were in the system. Every commune I visited where people had cast off their worldly materialism ultimately had a wealthy capitalist funding the operation.

What I'm saying is less a critique of hippies and more the eventual realization that none of us are really free from the system. Unless you want to be a prepper and live with very little in the middle of nowhere, you're still reliant on the same supply chain everyone else is.

Thank you. I will search for it.

I feel the time is here, or maybe a little past time, to start looking at what we all have in common and stop these 24/7 sniping attacks at Trump supporters. They seem to be the target of almost all of these "out of the blue" and off topic attacks and snipes. Hillary and or Bernie supporters come in second.

I have the ability to give RESPECT to those I have never met and do not know. Doing so helps me open a repore and a conversation with them. I have done it on here many times. Pick any two people and I feel confident in only a few minutes of open respectful conversation they can find common ground.

Throwing an "out of the blue" insult completely ensures nothing you say to them afterward will be given any credence. Some have not learned this lesson yet.

What givers me hope is the majority of people of whom read this thread seem to like it and those that snipe tended to stand out rather than be the majority.

I think this is what we need. Mutual RESPECT given, then received, which can lead to both having a mutual understanding and the hate is pushed aside.

That message is what both Hillary and Sanders are both saying, yet their supporters seem to do just the opposite at every opportunity.

Trump and Cruz are no daisies either, but how about US...the members of Debate Politics...take to heart the theory our candidates are saying and give it a try?

I would love to see, and invite a dyed in the wool leftist liberal start a thread and say what they like about conservatives. Some here have already said a few things already.

This divisiveness is tearing us up and apart.

I think in order for this peacefulness to work, both sides have to agree they love the United States and do not want it destroyed. That would be a good starting place.
I can't see a meaningful discussion about how to mend our differences if the person I am talking to wants to see the US beaten down and destroyed.

Love of the United States is a good starting place. I am standing there now.

Is there anyone from the left or of a liberal leaning that would like to stand with me, and say why you love this country of ours?

I will start by saying America is one of only a few places in the world where you are basically only limited by your own initiative. There are other places where you are limited by your skin color, what tribe you hail from, who your father was, or how you pray. NOT HERE. Not only that, but we also put it in writing.

There is plenty of room at this starting point. Would someone from the left or a liberal like to join me and publically say why you love the US?

Context: American paranoia, and me going through some expat whiplash. It's a lovely exchange, though hard-won.

I'm probably not the kind of "left" you're thinking of, but I'll go ahead: I do love the US. I left for a lot of reasons, some having to do with also loving London, and some having to do with me reaching the end of my tether with what was going on there. It was complicated.

But it was never for lack of love. There are a few things I'll always miss. I'm better off here, for the way I'm aligned. But at the heart of it, my issue was always that I saw so much more potential -- which is a feeling borne of love -- and our political discourse lately seems like an attempt to strangle it out of existence rather than live up to it. That's a shame. But it's no lack of love.

I like you too RetiredNSmilin!

My wife is from Queen City, East Texas, where a person's word is everything.

Everyone has an equal footing with me from the start. Lying, cheating, and stealing will put a good distance between some new acquaintance and myself. So will taking credit for someone else's hard work, or blaming one's mistakes on someone else.

Love, peace, and good happiness stuff!

Thank you very much for the link.

It always is complicated and never simple. I enjoyed the UK very much. Rye especially.

Malaga, Spain would be where I would go if I had to leave the US.

SmokeAndMirrors...That is why I extended an offer for any liberals of left leanings to make a post IF you still love the United States in their own way, and do not want to see it destroyed by " strangling it out of existence ", as you said. Note, YOU were the only one that accepted the invitation.

I made this invitation to the liberal left, because as a general rule, and by what they say, I do not believe they have any affection for their country at all.

I can respect and yield to a person that sees solving our countries ills a different way than I. That means they still have love for the US, and want to fix its problems out of patriotism. We are on the same street, but just on different sides of that same street. No problem.

However, what I am seeing now with the liberal left, is they actually HATE the US, and thrive on the discourse created. Rather than wanting to fix an issue, they would rather agitate even further and maybe hope some innocent blood might get spilled. " That'll show em" !!! ".

That is why I honestly asked in a post..." Is there anyone in the liberal left that actually loves the United States?" and then asked them to tell us why they do, leaving all the hateful rhetoric at the door.

I have a bad feeling if anyone replies, it will be a " yes, but...." type answer with all kinds of dredging of issues involved.

Conservatives have no problem saying their love their country, and can give hundreds of reasons why.

The liberal left, however, is sadly, completely silent, and cannot say the same thing.

I miss the heroic, and principled hippies of yesteryear. They did not see demons in their corn flakes every morning, and could at least stop and smell the flowers. I could share a beer with them.

Well, perhaps you'd best take your own advice and not make assumptions or sling around stereotypes. ;)

I think the vast majority of lefties do love America. I am not very compatible with American "lefty-ness," but I know lots of them, and I can tell you most feel pretty much the way I do.

What's wrong with agitating? Your OP was basically praising agitation. You (and I) may disagree that how the mainstream movement is doing it is effective, but why would they be all about activism if they didn't think America was good enough to solve it?

In a way, I find that far more patriotic than just blind flag-waving which ignores our problems, which seems to imply we simply can't do any better. I think that's rather insulting. They think this is all we're capable of? Coming in 37th in healthcare, 76th in crime safety, 28th for child poverty, 20th in education is the best we can do? Really?

I don't understand how such people are perceived as loving their country more, when they see so little potential for it. I think we could do better.

You really think the conservative climate is any less about making politics a blood sport? Again, I recommend you take your own advice...
