Should You Always Tip in Cash at Restaurants?

I really really hate tipping culture in the US. I really think that the whole serving wage should be abolished and serving staff should just be paid properly, and I don't know how taxi drivers get away with demanding the tips they get.

That said, I still tip, and IMO tip well, but I don't carry much cash on me these days. Everything's plastic. Sorry if Amex take 2% or whatever but I'm already handing my money over I'm gonna do it in a way that's convenient for me.

I'ts not the 2% handling fee that they don't like, it's the if you charge the tip I have to report the the tip income which means my employer has to withhold taxes on it. They get cash... what tip?

Why should you not pay taxes on tipping income? How the tip goes from employer to employee, whether tips get pooled, whatever, as far as I'm concerned I've done my part.

You ask me, I'd rather pay higher prices, fund bigger wages, and not have to tip at all.

I'm not willing to carry cash around for the sole purpose of paying tips. I'll pay for the meal on my credit card, and I'll add the tip on my credit card. Be happy you got a tip at all.

I always prefer to tip in cash. Usually putting it in their hands as I leave if I can.

However, I never do the % thing. If it is two of us at a nice place the bill is normally about $50 or so. That means they will get a $5 bill, or more if they were especially nice.

I am not a filthy rich businessman like in NYC where they made that rule of 20%.

I don't because I don't carry cash. Ever. Anywhere that doesn't take plastic doesn't deserve to get paid IMO. I haven't had a single dollar bill in my wallet in a very long time.

I also no longer have either cash or coin with me. Debit card is the only way to go.

Cash is just...

i tipped a couple bucks at a mcdonalds one time for the person that collects the trays.

i must have been crazy

i figured if the Subway sandwich maker deserved a tip, so do the mcdonalds worker

Subway sandwich makers don't deserve a tip.

I don't think so either. They are not working for tips, they are all paid for the work they do. If they go above and beyond their job description, they can have a tip. Until then, no.
