What is the most beautiful city you have ever visited?

The most beautiful city I have ever visited has to be Vienna, Austria. The entire city is just one gigantic testament to the wealth and power of the Habsburgs and has the most beautiful gardens and parks I have ever seen, especially those of the Schonbrunn palace. The Danube running through the city is also fantastic. In fact the entire country is pretty breathtaking. A close second would be Amsterdam with all of its lovely buildings and canals.

South Tahoe on heavenly @10k ft after 30" of fresh powder and a 180" base

I went to a ski resort in Austria that went even higher, I don't ski or snowboard but it was still beautiful.

That's tough. I have been to Paris, Amsterdam, Rio, Florence, Rome....all beautiful.

But if I had to chose I think I would give it to Venice.

Well at Heavenly depending on the trail it feels like you're about to plunge into Lake Tahoe 5000 feet below. For a major city I'd say San Francisco.

Edit I'm all about a city on the water.

You should try Amsterdam then, the entire city has canals and is on the IJ lake.

Most beautiful? Overseas--- Paris. Here-- San Francisco.

But the most fun is still NYC.

My son recommends Prague- his description sounds like yours of Vienna. He mentions the Charles Bridge and the fact the city was untouched by the war.
Me? The most beautiful city is the one in the rear-view mirror. But then, my travels haven't brought me to Europe yet. This Fall, maybe.

I went to Prague, it was one fo the most depressing cities I have ever been to. Maybe it was because it was pouring rain but the city just seemed dirty and boring. The war is why I dislike most of the cities in Germany, almost all of them were bombed into oblivion and as a result they were rebuilt and are now really ugly.

Quebec City is pretty cool.

I don't really think of cities as beautiful. The coolest was Beale Street in summer in Memphis. Palma in Majorca was pretty awesome. Cannes had some great beaches.

Most beautiful place I have been is this little rain forest on a mountain on Puerto Rico. Look one way and all green, turn around and look out over the ocean. If you ever get the chance, it is really worth seeing.

whenever I hear habsburgs i immediately think inbreeding, why is that?

Eastern Europe, Athens.

In Central Europe, Vienna.

In Western Europe, The Hague (the old city, not the new). If you go to The Hague, you have to visit Madurodam.

In North Africa, Cairo, specifically the ancient market area and the Giza Plateau.

In West Africa, Marrakesh.

In the Northwest Pacific, the Island of Palau (all of them in the archipelago).

In the Southwest Pacific, The Island of Pohnpei.

The above are what I would describe as beautiful from an historical and natural viewpoint.

The Germans also had the chance to rebuild everything: industries, cities etc If you want a really ugly city that was bombed close to oblivion and then was rebuilt ugly, grimy and depressing - just (don't) go to Coventry in the UK midlands.

I worked there for a couple years with a truck design company - I lived 30 miles away rather than live in Coventry. Nuneaton is a nearby satellite town and most of the people who work in Coventry but wanted a nicer place to live relocated to Nuneaton.

I don't find cities beautiful. Interesting at times perhaps, but not beautiful. Nature is beautiful. The Saturn V on display is an amazing display of human effort. Cities are only as attractive as the success of the effort to combine human accomplishment and natural beauty allows.

You are so right.
I can't imagine how anyone would say "I always wanted to live in a 3 room walkup over a Lebanese deli ... I've finally arrived".

Yet some people do have such an objective. Beats me how anyone can choose that as a way to live given all the possibilities available, but there are those who find fulfillment living in cities. I guess I'm as much of an oddity to them as they are to me. I simply prefer to live closer to that which sustains me, and that ain't no city.

I agree. I would put it right behind Paris.

Depends on if you mean the whole city, or just parts of one

but i will go with the parts of a city.....

Salzburg Austria

Lake Tahoe Nv

Milan Italy

The Hague Netherlands

Vancouver Canada

San Francisco Ca

and an honorable mention to Hong Kong....

Nassau and Paradise Island, in the Bahamas.

JaMAN!

Good choice. You should have been it 50 years ago.

I don't consider any major cities to be "beautiful" at all....I generally don't find urban areas to be visually appealing.

I've seen some awfully beautiful little villages and burgs , though... they tend to blend in with the natural surroundings... and it's those surrounds that lend the village it's beauty.
