I found out that my tax preparer's accounting license has gone inactive. Looks like it was not renewed. According to the state the license is good but he can not work as an accountant. Now am I curious, what could be reasons why his license became inactive?

I'm licensed for health and life insurance in my state. In my state you can actually look up someone's insurance and if it's been terminated because of malfeasance you can found out. If it's simply expired you can find that out too. The most likely is that he had continuing education credits that he didn't complete in a timely fashion. It's highly unlikely that he actually failed any CE courses.

One generally doesn't need a license to be a tax preparer.

They might have continuing education requirements, which he either failed to take or pass. Lawyers have that. They have to take "x" number of hours of continuing education courses. I suppose if they didn't do it, their license would be temporarily suspended until they did the classes.

You can probably find out on the internet. If not, ask him or call the licensing bureau, whatever that is. I doubt it's private. Maybe he just decided he didn't need to be a licensed accountant. But maybe he did something wrong.
