Hi,

anyone know what area of the country this area code is located?

I've gotten voice mail messages from the number posted in which the caller in a threatening manner said it is the IRS and they are putting out a warrant for my arrest. I called that number the reception being crackly and the guy who answered claimed to be a IRS agent. But something in Denmark tells me this does not sound right.

Got ideas? Who can I report this to?

Scam Warning: The Ongoing IRS Phone Scam

The IRS doesn't call like that. Scam.

If you owe the IRS, don't worry, you'll get plenty of mail long before phone calls are made.

In fact, you won't be able to do quite a lot of things, like register your car to drive.

You can usually find out what's going on if you Google the number. The first result you get is:

Access Denied

It's a discussion of people getting the same call from the same number, all of it is a scam.

Area code 202 is for Washington D.C., not a foreign country.

Doesn't mean anything. If it was the IRS they would not be calling you from D.C. unless you lived in the commuting area. Otherwise, they would be calling you from the closest Federal office to your location. Even then, it would only be to set up an appointment for you to come to their office if there is a problem with your taxes. This would typically follow mailed notices indicating an issue and asking you to contact them.

You can ignore the call, or you can be proactive and contact your local IRS section and ask if there is a problem.

The irs likes collecting it's money, so much so that they would rather take payments and settle owed money over sending someone to jail.

That being said it is a scam, the irs does not make threatening calls or send threatening mail, and only issues warrants if you refuse to show up to or contact the irs for settlement or refuse to pay anything. Prior to this they send plenty of warnings, through mail, phone, etc.

I knew it. I called the number, left a message and they called back. Some guy answered and I asked for his name and badge number which he hesitated. I said I was with the FBI and the fellow quickly hung up the phone! Anyone have ideas on how to "play around with this fellow?"

You can't trust the caller ID giving you an accurate number. Those can be spoofed and/or redirected. They use the 202 area code cause it makes it seem more official in that that area code is Washington DC's area code.

If you have a phone number to call back and someone answers I would report them to the FBI.

Never play games with these people. Never never ever play games with criminals. Rule #1.

This criminal most likely has your information or can easily get it. The last thing you need in your life is a pissed off criminal who most likely is mentally disturbed deciding to get even with you. Michael Myers or Manson comes to mind for me when I think of the type of people I need to fear. The real life Michael Myers and Manson's are out there. Trust me. You do not want them coming after you.

I got a similar message. I called the FBI in Seattle and they told me to notify the Treasury IG.

You report it to The Dept of Treasury Inspector General
TIGTA.gov or call 800-366-4484

but if you call, they will just tell you to go to the website and file a complaint and use the number that called you.

I got my call from 206-622-0460 in the Seattle area.

They are getting tons of calls like this.

I had to laugh because I have not filed or paid taxes since 2008.

Thanks for the information. I had forgotten about the treasury. I wonder if they will actually look into it or is the same as when you call the local police when your house is broken into. The could care less because they are too busy with seat belt violators.

My brother got a couple of calls from them last year. It's a scam.

No worries. I sent an email to a buddy of mine to report it. He'll square it away. He's a prince from a small country in Africa. Get this...he doesnt even know me and trusts me with their national treasury. Seems there is some sort of strife or internal turmoil going on. I sent him by back account info and he is going to deposit 384 MILLION bucks...and I get to keep 10% just for helping him out. I'll call him, he'll call their embassy, their embassy will call our embassy...we'll get to the bottom of this whole IRS scam thing.

If you don't recognize the number don't answer the phone. If its important they will leave a message. If they don't leave a message then it isn't important.

PSA: Whenever you call a fed agency, the first words out of your mouth should be, "What is your federal employee identification number?"

State employees also have ID numbers.

That's a fake IRS scam. The IRS will NEVER call you for official business. They send letters. They want their warnngs and communications in writing.

I got them a year or two ago. Don't answer such calls. Call the IRS and leave a message about the call and the ph #. The IRS has a scam reporting number.

It's a high level scam. When I got the call previously, I didn't answer. The guy left a long message about "irregularities" or something in my return, and scary things like that, and I needed to call back immediately, blah blah blah. I didn't call back, of course. THEN the guy calls again a couple of hours later, saying, "You haven't returned our call. I must warn you.....blah blah blah." I can see how old people, immigrants, and others might not catch on, and actually return the call. It was scary to me, even though I knew it was a scam.

You know never to give personal information over the phone, right? And never give someone authority to get payment by your credit card or out of your account?

Speak of the devil. I just got a voicemail from the IRS scammers.

The message left this time was that they were filing a lawsuit against me, blah blah blah, and it's urgent that I call them back. I'm guessing they'll make a followup call later today, when I don't call back.

It wasn't a 202 area code. They use different numbers.
