If you were to learn to speak a language...

...that you don't already speak... which language would be first on your list to learn?

Me: German... then Spanish.

I would say Spanish would be the most useful to me.

Spanish for me.

Since the United States is already acting as foster parents for Mexican and Central American governments.

I agree Spanish would be more useful on a daily basis, and I love Mexican culture, but I also have a serious interest in German culture and want to be able to watch WW2 movies without reading subtitles. :2razz:

Kikuyu then Swahili

I was just encourage others to learn English.

me ? english of course.......

Dutch then German probably. My family is part Dutch and I love the Netherlands so I would like to learn the lanaguage.

O'odham. This white boy would blow some minds out on the res!

Aside from English I can read Japanese well enough to get through novels with some pain and with the aid of a dictionary. My speaking ability stinks because I haven't had anyone to speak with for about 10 years and I don't regularly listen to the language. I really should do something about that since we're planning an extended visit in a couple of years.

I'm teaching myself Latin right now to be able to read ancient writers - Cicero etc. After than I was thinking Spanish since my wife speaks it.

Chinese then either Arabic or Japanese

Why Chinese? Interest in the culture? For your job?

To the OP:

Spanish would be most helpful, but French or Italian would be fun.

Spanish.

I'm the only one in the house that doesn't speak it and my kids think I'm a retard.

American. This forum is a really swell (see, I can already use some American idioms!) teaching aid. I'm gonna get real good bye'n'bye. Thanks y'all.

I can already speak a passing Spanish. Not fluent, but good enough to get by. After that, I'd probably say Chinese. Always wanted to visit there.

Indian.

So that when I call a help desk for whatever various reasons, I can effectively communicate with the person on the other end.

Utilitarian purposes: Spanish, ASL.

The former would be much easier for me than the latter, because the latter is very nonverbal.

Japanese! I already speak English sort of, and can get by in German and French.

Uncle Sam already taught me Spanish, Cambodian, and Arabic. Frankly, I have zero desire to learn another language.

But if I were, it would probably be Latin. Or Klingon.

probably Spanish, and then Mandarin.

Well French is the language of love so it would have to be that, but then because it is the language of love I naturally already speak French ;)
