Passenger Catches Fire and Is Sucked From Plane at 14,000 Feet

Seems to be the captain's theory as well. If so, serves him right.

As an aside, it is truly amazing how good aircraft safety and pilot training really is. Even with a hole blown in the plane at 14,000 feet, they can still make a safe landing with no additional casualties and only a single injury. That's incredible.

Technology and engineering have created aircraft that can fly under extreme conditions. Even back in WWII, B-17's would make it back to the field with half a wing shot off, or most of the tail missing. Pilots, are an amazing group of people. They work the most boring, repetitive job but have to be prepared at any second to face death with professional calm and resolve and not allow their emotions to get in the way of protecting the lives under their protection and control.
