Yeah, yeah ... "it's the thought that counts". But sometimes it's painfully obvious that the "thought" was rude, mean or just dumb.

Here's one of mine. My aunt gave me a Christmas gift early. It was a jewelry candle in a Ziploc baggie. Okay, I can look past the baggie -- some people don't like to wrap gifts. But when I opened the top of the candle, I noticed she burned down the candle enough to get the jewelry out and then gifted me the rest of the candle. I mean....

You need new relatives Josie.

A lady (SWF) that I dated back in Boston (Cambridge) used to say "my family is just the assholes that I am related to."

I think my sister was giving me a message last year when she gave me the ear and nose hair trimmer...

A couple years back my wife got me a bunch of random tools for Christmas. They weren't tools I wanted, or needed. They weren't tools I could use for my hobbies, or even ones I'd use on a regular basis around the house.

She was just stuck for what to get me and figured "guys like tools" and ran with it.

We had a talk after that.

The holidays are definitely more about family, friends and being together but last year a family friend gave everyone gourds. We generally have a large gathering and it was kind of amusing to watch a dozen or so people open up large, nicely wrapped packages then get a weird look on their face as they pulled a tumor shaped, grey pumpkin out of the box.

This was just so...low.

I sent that message to my dad a couple years ago.

Fruitcake the #1 gift for those you care nothing about.

1 - gifts of alcohol of any kind

No. Specific kinds of alcohol, but not any kind.

2 - crystal goblets for their gifts of alcohol

No, I have all the bar-ware I need.

3 - a wine making kit

No, I don't like wine, and I already have the equipment for brewing hard cider.

4 - a 2 gallon still to go with the wine making kit

No, I have no interest in home distilling.

5 - yeast and ingredients for the wine making kit

Replace wine with hard cider and this one would be okay.

6 - rib eye steaks fresh from the butcher shop

No, buying me dinner is not a gift.

7 - fresh maine lobsters from the fish market

No, buying me dinner is not a gift.

8 - a new hat exactly like the old hat

No, my hat works just fine.

9 - new gloves exactly like the old gloves

No, my gloves work just fine.

10 - a new jacket exactly like the old jacket except 2 sizes larger now.

No, my coats work just fine, and I've lost weight, in the last few years, not gained it.

1/10. This is why you don't stereotype when gift shopping.
