All that happened well after the day in celebration. Not sure it's altogether fair to un-celebrate due to what those that came after did to the Native Americans. On the day we are celebrating, the two groups at least is historically indicated that no genocide was taking place.

Is there any way the fringe left could cease their endless wailing and "We hate straight, white, Christian America" attacks long enough to just let American families enjoy a single damn holiday? What a nightmare it must be to always turn toward the darkness and their boundless internal rage and hatred and self-loathing that is so apparent.

In this case, the OP has gone back 400 years to demand guilt and shame. What absolute nonsense.

You know, no wonder so many Catholics are liberal.... they are the Original Sin carriers of the political world.

Well, how about this? Most people have tomorrow off at least, and that's plenty to give thanks for. Being able to put food on the table is another reason. Spending time with loved ones and friends, sometimes for the very last time, is yet another.

I just don't understand why some people are so determined to find a dark cloud in the sky. Happy hunting, I guess; if you look hard enough, you're bound to find it.

"look hard enough," well that's just idiotic, it doesn't take any effort at all to recognize that Europeans arriving in North America was the beginning of a huge genocide. If YOU try hard enough you can keep your head in the sand and your ass in the air.

And a blessed Thanksgiving to you, Summerwind.

Roughly 90% of the native population died of disease without ever having seen a single white person. The descendants of the remaining 10% or so are actually still around, or have mixed into the greater population (I'm 1/16 Cherokee, myself).

"Genocide" is frankly far too strong a word.

You sound like you're a lot of fun to be around.

My children are one-eighth Native American. And tomorrow is not only about events of the distant past over which none of us alive had any control. It's about, or so I always thought, giving thanks for the blessings in our lives.

Actually, what the brain addled may be struggling with is the history of mans migration. Everyone of us have benefited from migration and victory over inferior people and cultures. It's called evolution.

So for those conflicted with the migration of a superior group who supplants an inferior one, the only conclusion is you must reject evolution.

Why do you reject evolution? Are you one of those bible thumpers?

That's like arguing against international celebrations of Oktoberfest because Germany later because a fascist genocidal regime.

Being critical of, say, Columbus Day makes sense to me. Columbus himself was a horrible human being from the moment he set foot on North American soil. He also had little or nothing to do with the creation of America as it currently exists.

Being critical of Thanksgiving makes none. It is a day of harvest celebration that actually long pre-dates American settlers, and on the harvest day that turned into the American version of this tradition, it was by all accounts very peaceful, and had been for a good while before that. What happened afterwards has no baring on the fact that this was a peaceful day of celebration.

If anything, Thanksgiving can serve us as a day to remember that peace is a choice we can make, and that we can rebuild our relationship with Natives any time we like if we simply put in the effort.

Lighten the **** up, for heaven's sake.

So the idea of celebrating the giving of thanks and celebrating family and love and friendship annually becomes illegitimate because of atrocities that occurred way after the original celebration and that have nothing to do with the celebration itself?

****...

As someone whose biological dad has heavy roots in the Incan tribe in Ecuador (who although they never met the pilgrims, met very much the same fate at the hands of the spaniards), I'm asking anyone who throws this dumb **** around to GROW UP.

Are we to stop giving thanks? Are we to not be celebratory? Are we to forever hang our heads down in shame because of something over 2 centuries ago?

We might as well just give up all the holidays  I mean, I'm sure you can find something bad that happened in relation to every holiday, but that doesn't mean that we should just stop celebrating those holidays and the ideals that they represent.

It is no secret that the USA in the 1880 deported Native Am's to "reservations" and when they would not go the US Cavalry slaughtered them.

Similar to the English Army isolating Boer families in concentration camps.

Adolf did not come up with the idea he just modernized it.

a thread was started about it a few years ago but a few posters knew what it was about.it is about food my friends.you should thank to those who gave you turkey.it is the fact of this day.

Ir's what has almost always happened when a technologically and numerically superior people meet a technologically and numerically inferior people. It's sad to see in retrospect, but at that time and place, it was simply what happened. If we could all go back in time and stop it, we would, but we can't, so we work to set aside the acrimony and move forward with our lives.

Bah Humbug! I hope people like you choke on it.

If there is anyone I truly wish will choke on it is this guy called Rob who people believe conned Gary into giving him all his properties.

Well, if you mean the US, I'd agree.

As for the major part of the continent, I'd say that his being financed by Spain had a helluva lot to do with America becoming Spanish speaking.

And he never ever set foot on North American soil.
