Lovin it!

When I Have some money I'm going to build a new rig I think, love those cases where you can hide all the wires behind the side plate and make it look real sexy.

Aren't you going a bit overboard with doing SLI straight off the bat?

Puts a bit more strain on the cooling that's unnecessary I would think... cause one of those Graphics card can handle virtually every game on the market today.

Even my older AMD 1gb is keeping up pretty well:

Refurbished: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7790 DirectX 12 11210-99-90G 1GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 CrossFireX Support Video Card - Newegg.ca

I'm no techie but when I had my new machine built the guy told me that the SSD wasn't going to give much additional benefit so I went with a 250GB SSD and a 2 TB SATA. Was he steering me wrong?

Two questions:

1) Why the GTX 960 instead of spending just a little more for the 970?
2) Why waste the money on SSD data drives, especially if you are just going to RAID them? Why not buy two 2 or 3 TB HDD and RAID those? Save some money there and spend it on an upgraded OS drive and/or upgraded video card.

Just asking. Everyone has different wants and needs from a machine. I'm still saving up to buy a new machine myself, but with A/C going bad, sump pump going out, new fence for a new dog, etc., money hasn't exactly been easy to save this year.

I'm no techie but when I had my new machine built the guy told me that the SSD wasn't going to give much additional benefit so I went with a 250GB SSD and a 2 TB SATA. Was he steering me wrong?

Well depends on what you define as benefit. Now days thanks to the iPad and mobile phones, people expect their devices to start up fast. A normal harddrive running Windows 7 or earlier will take ages (relatively speaking) too boot up. Windows 8 and especially 10 has improved start up time dramatically on normal harddrives, but nothing beats an SSD when it comes to boot up and running of some programs/games/apps... basically anything that needs to access large amounts of data fast.

But for movies, general files, and even games.. no there is no benefit.

Thanks!!

I had the OS installed on the SSD and pretty much everything else is going on the SATA. I have had no performance issues.

Yeah thats what happened I started a new job and i have some extra loot :)
as for your question it probably is BUT the reality is its more over kill then you even think. To be honest im not much of a gamer, I do game but not a lot . . . .

I went with two because one will run three monitors. Im more likely to be playing a low level game on the main screen or architecture program then be streaming video on one and chatting on another. Not sure what monitors im getting yet. Probably 3 dells. I went with three monitors for the first system and then stepped it down for two. Didn't like the set up for the space I had etc. Im trying again and the other card will actually go to a sony TV for when I stream video. SO yes it probably is over kill but Im doing it anyway :D

theres pros and cons to it and the tech is still new but Ill be using the SSD for my OS/boot drive and the HD for data. Two of my buddies have this set up and I like it quite a bit.
I wouldnt say you were steered wrong at all.

THe SSD will improve start time for your operating system for sure but IMO (for whats the worth) it wont do much for pics and vides etc.

1.) see post #9 for my usage
http://www.debatepolitics.com/off-t...my-own-pc-its-gonna-beast.html#post1065272906
970s are 1bout $100 more a piece

2.)??? you must of miss read I bought hybrid drives not just SSD but SSHD.
But to answer it was just what I choose. I can actually get the SSHD drives cheaper than most people through my job and its just new tech I wanted to get :D

3.) no biggie . . . .and the **** always seems to hit the fan all at once. WHat you describe sounds like me two years ago. AC, sub-pump, then washer and dryer so I feel your pain.

Whenever I start thinking about building my own rig I get sucked into the world of crazy wall-mounted stuff, admire them, decide I don't have the time for it and then go back to my console =/

What changes would you make for something to run gigabyte sized Photoshop files and zbrush which would be number crunching huge polycounts?

Certainly the recommendations I see are as much RAM as possible but the rest of the system is something I have little info on.

Nice rig...but I would make some changes:

Water cool the CPU. Quieter, better for overclocking, makes for a cleaner looking interior of the case. Consideration would have to be made for what kind and how much room is in the case for the reservoir/fans. I like Corsair.

Dump the 960's and go with one 980. Maybe get another one later. That one 980 will handle 3 monitors easy...unless you are going above 1080p.

Get 16 GB's of RAM.

Water cool might happen in the future thats for sure. . . . for now im going this way . . . I did think about it though and thanks for the suggestion. Im hopping with a total of 7 fans (6 case and 1 cpu) I should be fine. not to mention temo contro lin the room it will be in.

IM sticking with my double 960s for now based on one running 3 monitors and the other running a TV.

has for the RAM i have 32GB, 4 sticks of 8GB

i5+ processor.. the newest the better. Xeon is also recommended if you got the cash..

Ram ram ram ram.. fast as possible, and as much as possible.

Graphics card.. if I remember right, Zbrush dont care much about the graphics cards, but I suggest one that can pump out 4k content (which most can now days). Now if you are doing 3D Open GL rendering then you need some GPU firepower. Of course we are talking relative here...

Harddrive.. normal is fine. You can go SSD, but it costs, and the benefit is marginal.

Your list says DDR3, you link to DDR4. You would want DDR4 for gaming, will make a noticeable difference on the most modern high end games.

Where do new CPUs stand vs the last iteration of CPU?

On some arts forums the advice is to stay with older full power processors because the new bunch all use lower power processors thus slowing down handling large Photoshop and zbrush files. So for an example a 4 year old Fujitsu t902 is way more powerful than the newer fujitsu t904.

Seems the case with a lot of tablets but does this affect desktops too?

Depends on which version of the chip you are getting. Some are designed for mobile, but others are not. And your Fujitsu are laptops, so your argument is correct, as mobile intel chips have been getting "slower" but better at battery management over the last 4 years.

There is a trade off when talking mobile. Companies have to balance between power and battery life. Look at Alienware laptops.. **** for battery life, but has power, where as the Macbook Air has lots of battery life, but is not exactly powerful.

But if you get a desktop chip then new chips are marginally more powerful than last years (at least for now), with new tech built into them.

Thanks, looking at certain software that has killed my computers in the past when manipulating large pieces of artwork I want the most powerful processor and largest amount of RAM first.

Is 32GB RAM the highest amount that can be supported by a new processor still?

No, you can have 4 sticks of 32GB but 128GB is a bit of an overkill for the time being.

Wow, you can tell I've been mainly a tabletpc user for the last few years.

And erm... 128GB just means I can handle 3000 x 3000 file at 600dpi SO MUCH FASTER! My decision is made.

Hell I still remember when I was told that you can have 4GB of RAM and I was like "WHY WOULD YOU EVER REQUIRE THAT MUCH". I was so naive.

64 GB for most newer chips.

Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7-6700K Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.20 GHz) Specifications

Top end desktop Intel i7 processor atm.

However you could go Xeon Intel processors... they have a capacity up to 1536 GB ram :) but the price.... cheapest is 1200+ dollars hehe.
