I have two dogs. Both think they are people. Both are completely and helplessly spoiled. It's safe to say we are dog lovers.

#1) you can't carry pepper spray in the UK
#2) you don't have leash laws in the UK
#3) your problem isn't with dogs, it's with humans

We do have a serious problem with how some self protection is viewed here in the UK, you can now defend yourself in the home if attacked by a burglar but you are still at the mercy of any idiot in the park who decides to let their badly trained dog run around.

Leash laws sound a great idea but I don't think they would be enforced here, I know in Switzerland you have to pass a dog handling test before you can have a dog. I think this is great, as you say the problem is humans rather than animals but that's no consolation when a dog wants to attack you as you walk through a park.

It's the dog with the teeth and threatening behavior.

Anyhow, are leash laws enforced in the US? Do you have parks used by plenty of ordinary citizens? London has enforcement of dog obedience (so many tourists, lose business otherwise) but other towns and cities basically have a free-for-all approach. There is no enforcement and many parks are empty or not used by many except the dog walkers and their badly trained dogs.

Leash laws are sporatic, depending on the area, with cities being more stringent about it.

I do know someone who basically was basically threatened by their neighbor with their dog, and actually had their dog attack his dog. He managed to get enough evidence together to have the other person's dog confiscated until 1) he got insurance, and 2) he paid a fine and 3) got a special enclosure for the dog. He coudn't afford the insurance, so the dog got put down. The dog was just being obedient, and in general was not a vicious dog, but the owner is the one that was definitely responsible. He also was forced to pay for my friend's dog vet bills.

I've had too many bad experiences fending off badly "trained" dogs on my daily walk to work across a park to like dogs anymore.

I've become more firmly of the opinion the UK should allow innocent people to carry pepper spray or mace for self protection. Then I wouldn't care what your bull terrier / rottweiler / alsatian / mastiff is doing in a public space/

Cats for the win now.

When I was running volunteer canvasses, I would train the volunteers on how to check for dogs in people's yards. We had another guy on our canvass, a former Air Force survival instructor, who had a run in with a roaming big angry dog. He gave a spiel one time on what to do about that as well. It was pretty funny, unintentionally, but I always tried to make these things instructive but light hearted, too. No need to scare away volunteers!

Bad doggies!

Both. I love cats and dogs in equal measure, but my own cats and dogs are best!

they rewally like owls

Well, my cats have always liked owls. Raw and unseasoned. They helpfully did their own defeathering.

Nowadays, all my kitties are indoor only.

That is so sad. I would be upset with my boy cat if he killed an owl. I love owls. He kills fat doves usually, and once in a while some other random bird.

That was many years ago, when we were weaning a feral litter into eventually becoming indoor only kitties. I too love owls, and birds of all kinds.

All of my cats have usually been the indoor type, with some excursions out to the yard for a bit. This young male Norwegian Forest Cat I have now is a little beast, he loves being outside all the time. I used to feed so many birds, squirrels and other critters on my window sill and with a feeder, but that had to stop when he started eating the birds I was feeding. Troubly little beast, but I love him.

They probably sense something in you.

I never have bad experiences with dogs.

If you read previous exchanges you'll see that there are no leash laws or park attendants in most parks here. I had no problems with well trained dogs in 14 years walking across the park to work - only badly trained dogs.

Usually owned by people whose first action on releasing their animal was to reach for their mobile phone or sit in their car while their large dangerous dog ran around entertaining itself.

I'm more of a cat person. I like dogs, but it's just that they bark so much. Also, I don't like them licking me.

I get along well with both...except Pit Bulls, of course. I'd shoot every one of them if I could.

It isn't the dog that should be shot. It's their owner that should be shot.

Ya know, you are to pitbulls what jaydubya is to abortion, and logicman is to religion.

Think about that for a bit.

Since I don't know about jaydubya and abortion or logicman and religion, there's nothing to think about...unless you want to clarify yourself.
