Re: Where are you from?

That is actually how most Europeans and Asians see, little to distinguish one from another. I have a friend I have known since the 70's from Germany who has worked in the travel industry all his life. He has some of the most amazing insights about nationalities, his great comment about Canadians is "very polite, yes, remember they excel at hockey." But, you are right..."ordinary"

That is funny. I have heard jokes about Canadians down here, but mostly with the accent on the vowel sounds (especially the "A" as I'm sure you know). Hockey, yep, that's like my friend from Minnesota (who also has some fun long vowel sounds) who always heard about playing hockey in that state. Being a little country girl from the middle of nowhere USA makes me just a nobody, just a plain Jane. That's okay, I don't care. I loved growing up outside with nobody around. Lots of nature, daydreaming, reading and writing.

It also made traveling to all these exciting places around the US and Europe oh so wonderfully magical! So different from what I grew up with. Like a dream almost.

Sounds like Kansas.

It may be a blessing, as many times we get labelled a certain way out of the gate. The German is going to be this way, etc., often dead on, but we like to at least like to feel unique.

For me its accents. Either eastern Europe or anywhere USA, I can usually pick the place based on the accent

Born in New Jersey...and have lived here all my life...except for the two years I lived in Lincolnshire, England.

Great state.

We can take it!

Yeah, I like guessing the accents here. It gets tough with all the varieties from out East. When I was touring around Europe years ago, the people there always wanted to guess our European ancestry. They'd look at facial features and say what we looked like. That was crazy, and I didn't think anybody did that anymore, to be honest. It kinda reminded me of studying the old 19th century stuff when they thought they could tell "race" by the head and face structure or whatever it was. Kinda creepy, but it happened a lot, especially while in Germany --- but it wasn't always Germans there that did that. People from around Europe always wanted to guess or find out where our ancestors had come from. It was neat the way they could tell us so much about the people who lived in certain areas over there, especially if we were in an area where one of us thought we had come from.

Really neat. Traveling is so much fun.

It used to be cheaper to fly into Albany and drive to Montreal, but I just looked up the prices
and it does not look much different.
Canada is very nice, good folks generally.
I have been going to Alberta mostly the last few years, but Quebec is very nice.
Think about going in the warmer season, because they really do have winter.

Yep, no joke! I heard one of my uncles telling me about his old riding buddies and how they rode their motorcycles up through Canada to Alaska and back. He said they had to time it just right to avoid both weather and bad flies or mosquitoes, some nasty bug like that. Maybe both? Anyway, it really sounded like an exciting trip.

Re: Where are you from?

Born in Oregon but raised in California...

Re: Where are you from?

Born and raised in southern Indiana. Traveled the world as a US Marine and after 20 years settled in western Tennessee. Now I'm a fat old Grandpa of 8 who works at the local Wal*Mart!!

Re: Where are you from?

I am from and posting from Swindon England UK, though I did live in Australia for 30 years, and probably seen more of the country than majority of Aussies.

Definitely mosquitoes. The further north you go the larger and hungrier they get. Can't imagine doing that trip on a murdercycle, even in a truck you eat a lot of rocks (went through two windshields on my last trip). But it is very, very beautiful.

Btw, if you do decide to make the journey just remember the Grizzly has a major love for the human female cycle scent. Don't camp out during that time of month.

Did you drive all the way up to Alaska? I would love to do that sometime. Alaska is another of those places that seems magical in my mind. Immense natural beauty, and still so rugged.

Yes, back in the 80s. I understand it's gotten more human tamed. Gotta go where the tourist crowd can't tolerate, which makes Northern Canada and Alaska the place to be.

Re: Where are you from?

Born in Texas, grew up in New Mexico, consider Kansas one of my 'home states', and because our family is so multi-ethnic, diverse in ancestry--I am pure mutt--ecumenical religiously, and so widely divided in sociopolitical points of view, I can't claim a strong influence from any part of my heritage. But while I can admire the virtues of almost any place on Earth, I suppose I am American through and through.

Re: Where are you from?

Born in Mexico City. Raised in Orange County, Hong Kong, and Las Vegas. Haven't lived anywhere in the last 13 years, just travel around year round.

Re: Where are you from?

I was born on the flanks of a volcano in Northern California that last erupted in 1917.

Re: Where are you from?

Where in the World? I came to USA from USSR in early 1980s. I visit both English language and Russian language forums.

I am from Florida.

I grew up in Europe however. Learned German too. Even dreamed in German.

College in Boston.

Grad school in San Francisco.

Naval/Marine service in Virginia and Southern California.

Professional career in San Francisco and San Jose.

So take a pick. Where would you say I am from ??

My short answer is always Florida.

My Florida accent even comes back after I go there to visit cousins and old girlfriends still.

But my dad was an Illinois yank and my mom was European (Greek, Italian, and German).

Any trip on a motorcycle would be a great trip.

I would prefer an SUV with lots of gas cans for any trip up the Alaska Highway though.

I'm getting my motorcycle license. I can't wait to take a long trip. I love being alone with my thoughts, which will be perfect for riding and nobody around to talk to.

I love that line by John Milius in Apocalypse Now where Robert Duvall says, "What do you know about surfing Major you're from goddam New Jersey !!"

I think I will use that next time we debate about philosophy Frank.

Re: Where are you from?

I love the west side of Crater Lake.

Tons upon tons of deer and elk there.

Beautiful rich thick rainforest.

That whole area is beautiful... Crater Lake is a marvel to see.

We took family vacations every year up to Oregon to visit family.

I consider myself a Huntington Beach guy though... grew up surfing.
