The free fruit will be available in clearly marked baskets in the fruit and vegetable section of each store. Baskets will be replenished during the day and fruit will be a selection of tasty fruit, for example this week will be apples and bananas.
The nationwide rollout follows the success of an initial trial at Countdown Botany Downs in East Auckland in mid-August this year. Link

Beyond the problem of a store having to make sure adults don't simply turn up and abuse the idea or steal food meant for kids for themselves, would this work in your country?

Presumably the store employees would be able to tell the difference between an adult munching on the fruit while they shop and a kid. :p

I am not sure anyone would notice.
I have seen a disturbing trend in the last few years, where parents let the kids eat stuff while in the
store shopping. Last Saturday while shopping, I saw a couple with 3 kids, the kids were all eating donuts,
they had not picked up the bag that would allow the cashier to charge them for the donuts.

It would make a difference if they were offering free charbroiled T-Bone, no doubt. It's usually the T-Bones that get people busted in the US. Everything else they can eat for free in the store.

The funniest was a friend of mine who picked up a 12 pack at the 711 and waved to the irate Achmed cashier on the way out the door. Silly me for assuming he had planned to pay for it.

That's the kind of thing that would ruin a well intended policy.
