Favorite snacks

Right now, it's chestnuts, because they're free. I get them from the outskirts of the soccer field my daughter plays at. Roast em and eat em. The other parents think I'm...nuts! I guess foraging isn't their thing? Free chestnuts, I'll take it. They're, like, 6 bucks per pound at the store.

Rest of the time? I go down the baking aisle and buy a large bag of pecan halves, a large bag of shelled walnuts, a large bag of unsalted almonds, a small bag of shelled pistachios, a small bag of macadamia nuts, and a large bag/tin of unsalted peanuts. I mix them all up, using 1 part pecan, 1 part almond, 1 part peanut, to 1/2 part walnut, to 1/4 part pistachio, 1/4 part macadamia. I then add some dried cranberries, and some reases pieces.

All said, this costs me about 100 bucks, maybe a touch more, but it gives me the worlds best trail mix for a looooong time. I mix up one big batch, and put that into an empty giant animal cookie jar. The bags give me enough nuts to do 2-3 batches. One animal cookie jug worth is trail mix snack for a month.

My father does just about the same thing. Stocks up on pecans, walnuts, peanuts in bulk from Sam's adds in raisins, dried cherries, what ever is around. Avoids the reeses pieces though. Diabetes is a pain

I have honey roasted peanuts and grapes almost every single day and they never get old. I would replace them with chocolate in a second if it was healthy. What do you like?

Coffee.
Seriously - some days that's all I eat and drink. Coffee.

Aside that - I'm fond of Mozzarella cheese off the block.

If it is a sweet unhealthy snack...chocolate covered cinnamon gummy bears. Otherise...apples. GOT to be crisp and fresh though.

Agreed with the crisp and fresh part of apples. I hate mushy apples.

A lot of cheese fans here! I love coffee with flavored creamers in them, my favorite probably being this one:

Dried cranberries mixed with sultanas and unsalted cashew nuts.

Takes a whole lot of self-disciple not to eat the cashew nuts first before they get mixed in.

Other than that - if a drink can be a snack, I'm going with Aunt Spiker and say coffee too.

ice cream
breakfast of champions

For breakfast?

My daughter is cow's milk intolerant and we discovered a goat milk ice cream which (we think) tastes better than ordinary ice cream so the whole family has switched over.

But not for breakfast...

~ being lactose intolerant leaves me with very limited choices. But not only do these not cause me GI problems, but they taste great, too:

See if you can find this stuff, tastes better than dairy ice cream and those around you will probably switch like my whole family did because my daughter is lactose intolerant too.

Chips and salsa. I buy jars of some amazing salsa -- made from locally grown vegetables -- from a local farm. Really, really great stuff.

Also, during the summer when the garden is cranking, I'll pick a tomato, cut it up, drizzle it with ranch or balsamic vinaigrette dressing, and chow down.

It's the way to go. I don't add a LOT of reeses pieces....I did that once, and frankly, it ruined the entire batch. I becomes less of a decent snack, and more of a candy sorta thing, which is not my thing. I like to just sweaten a touch.

My wife wonders why I don't just BUY bags of trail mix, but the thing is, I have a REALLY hard time paying 20+ dollars for a bag of what is, mostly, peanuts and raisins.

What I REALLY want to try is find someone that sells shelled hazelnut and brazil nuts, then I can skip the reeses pieces, even, as that'll sweeten up the batch nicely as well.

Enough garlic can make any vegetable palatable.

Sharp cheese and fruit.

Egyptian hummus(fava, not chickpeas) and pita.

"Muscle nachos"-cottage cheese, fresh salsa, and corn chips.

Celery and PB.

Ceviche with lemon.

I love goat cheese with peppers on crackers. Or raspberry jalapeno jam with cream cheese over crackers. Basically any kind of cheese with some crackers does it for me.

Thats another nice thing about the halloween season, lots of cheap pumpkins, I love roasted pumpkin seeds. I think I might try roasting them in a wood fired oven.
