Is it Wrong to Recline Your Seat on a Plane?

the seats have the ability to recline, therefore I have the right to recline ...if someone is extremely large I get how they might feel squashed...speak to the airline...my seat reclines I am going to recline.

I just prefer they do it politely - I had a guy knock me off my feet because he let his seat fly back while I was boarding. He didn't even notice. That type of thing is unnecessarily rude.

That's pretty much what I think. The seats reclines, deal with it.

Treat others as you wish they treat you. I never recline the seat because I know their knees are right there.

Now some say if it is there they are going to utilize it. That is fine but if your seat hits my knees you are going to go forward.

Depends on who is behind me.

It is not wrong to recline, but frankly I don't get it. Does the 2 inches of recline ever make anyone feel that much better? I just do not do it because the miniscule fraction I might feel better will make the person behind me feel 10 times worse.

I don't get pissed when folks recline, but I have to admit I wish they wouldn't. ;)

so how would you decide?

If the person behind me is a giant, no, I will not recline my seat.

I am 6'2, and if the person in front of me reclines their seat, it will smash my knees.

Just because you have the ability to be discourteous of others, does not make it right to do so.

I've never had a person behind me so large that it mattered. it doesn't not recline all that much

Then no worries. Who cares. If you reclining your seat does not affect the person behind you, what's the point of worrying about it?

I'm simply replying to this concept of "If the seats are made to recline, then it's not discourteous to use that function", because that is not so.

Cars are designed to go faster than 80 mph, but that in no way makes it legal to do so.

but it kind of is because they are meant to recline and they do so slightly, it is not discourteous ...in order for it to hit your knees they would have to be up on the seat....thus recline away...

In European low-cost plane seats cannot recline. Also, I have been inconvenienced trying to have a meal when the person in front takes up space over my tray. I prefer the train or taking a bus.

lol...so everyone but poor sleepy buddy can recline...actually the woman beside him would have a tad less room than pictured too

it's like sitting behind the big hair-do at the theatre

Not true. Again, I'm 6'2, and mostly legs. You recline, and the back of your seat will mash into my knees, no exceptions, just about.

Just because you have the ability, does not make it RIGHT, to be discourteous.

Treat others as you would have them treat you. That rule will pretty much never let you down in life, I promise.

LOL seriously? if I want to sleep I'm discourteous because you happen to be behind me, everyone else who paid the same as me can recline but nope...keep that seat up girlie, buddy has long legs......interesting perspective you have there

thanks for the life instruction though

No problem.

Like I said, treat others as you would want to be treated. Pretty simple.

No, there's nothing wrong with it. The seats are designed to recline, so I'll recline them if I want to. And I usually do because it's much more comfortable.

If you need extra leg room, you should buy a seat with more leg room. Don't complain about me doing what the seat is designed to do.

who has time to recline or sleep on a plane nowadays?
that's one of the few times I can actually work unimpeded for 4-6 hours.

Seriously obese people have to buy two seats. Seriously tall people should choose their airline according to their needs and how that airline is willing to accommodate them. If you're 6'5" tall, don't choose to cheap it out by picking an airline that provides only 28" of leg room then complain there's not enough leg room. Not when there are other airlines that provide 36" of leg room.

Exactly. Someone's seat squashes my knees then it's going back up pronto.

Business and first class seats aren't a problem since they are more like pods and can fully recline without affecting the person sitting behind them but when I do fly coach I usually take the aisle seat on the emergency exit row so I've got plenty of leg room.

So, tall people don't deserve cheap flights?

Let me ask you a question.

If we were all piling into a single car to go out to dinner, and I sat in front, and you shorter folks sat behind me...would you want me to slide my seat ALL the way back, crushing your feet and legs, or would you want me to be polite, and suffer some MILD discomfort in the form of less leg room, to prevent you from major discomfort, in the form of NO leg room?
