Hunter escapes attack by shoving arm down bear's throat

[...]

The bear then bit Dellwo's leg and shook him, tossing him in the air. As the bear came at the man again, Dellwo recalled a story he read in a magazine.

"I remembered an article that my grandmother gave me a long time ago that said large animals have bad gag reflexes," he said. "So I shoved my right arm down his throat."

The advice worked, and the bear left.

Grizzly at that.

I wonder how many would be able to act like that?

Interesting. Another good tip is to stab two fingers into their nostrils. Pain receptors there are really sensitive and they'll go running. Of course that is probably a lot harder to do than sticking your arm down their throat.

Always carry one or two sharp hunting knifes with just for this. It's easier to slice a bear's throat.

Relatively easier, anyhoo.

I've heard the same thing can work with dogs. If they're going to attack, their tendency is to bite, then pull. Typical response is to pull away, which exacerbates the damage. Do the opposite, shoving your hand/arm/limb to the back of their mouth and you can put them off guard, potentially minimizing the bite.

I've had a number of dogs over the years and they all like to play grab with their toys. Trying to pull a toy from their jaws only incited them to pull harder on their end - which was the game. But do the opposite and shove the toy back into their jaw and invariably, they'll release it. Had one who'd let go then immediately sit down and stare up at me, disappointed, as if to say "why'd you do that?" :)

Something similar with your finger the larger beaked members of society also.
This is just me, but I wouldn't recommend pushing your whole arm down your budgies throat, let alone any small animal.
