My buddy's pug got sprayed last night and he went through a helluva time trying to de-stinkify him today. The vet actually helped do it using some product they carry (and it cost him over $150 including an over night stay to make sure he was okay), but the vet gave a home remedy that could have saved time and kept the skunk smell out of the car and house, so I'm passing it on:

How to deskunk your pet:

Mix:

1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 tsp of liquid dish soap

Using rubber gloves, mix in a bucket or large bowl - do NOT mix in a bottle, make ahead of time or store any leftovers as it can explode. Use whatever you need and then dump the rest either down the toilet or dispose of outside.

Wash your pet with the solution still using the rubber gloves, keep it out of their eyes (flush the eyes with just plain water, mouth and nose with plain water). Do not keep this mix on too long as it can bleach their fur. It's also worth noting to do this outside as the skunk smell rubs off on everything. If you get some of it on yourself, just wash your clothes using regular laundry detergent and add some baking soda to the wash. Try to keep the dog or cat outside and out of the car or the skunk smell will rub off on everything!

After washing with the mix, wash your pet a second time with regular pet shampoo, then let them rest and dry off.

Take it from a guy who lives in the country and has had to do this to his pets and himself - tomato juice does it every time. Just good old tomato juice. Not V8 though, that doesn't work.

That's what I've always heard as well - straight tomato juice and the old timer farmers I remember said the same thing and told me the more acidic the tomato's the better. I can't say what I posted works, but it's what the vet told him to do the next time (and there will be a next time) this happens that could save him the Benjamin and Grant.

What the vet said may in fact work, but I know for a fact that tomato juice works great. And, it's cheap. But, if it's you that got sprayed, you have to find someone else to go to the store - they tend to kick you out before you can check out if you go yourself.

You dont say how long you are suppose to leave it on though, so it wont hurt your pet or bleach its fur

He only said to wash them fairly quick and not to leave it on too long. I don't know exactly what that means - but I'd interpret it to mean a quick scrub and then rinse.

Tomato juice always worked for me, except on the Chow. He had to be shaved then doused with tomato juice, his fur was too thick.

It is rare for a skunk to spray. You got to hem them in really tight usually before they spray.
