I had more than one job at a warehouse and it seems that most of they suck. Not even the job but itself either.

The three same problems always happen

1.They make you work for days to weeks without giving a steady schedule
2.If they give you a schedule they make you wait weeks till they give you a start date
3.Sometimes they only give you a schedule 2 days at a time. So its impossible to plan stuff for the week

Is this seriously suppose to be the norm for jobs? Its kind of frustrating.

Not all jobs are like that. However, jobs that in companies that have varying requirements by their clients, tend to be passed on to their employees in the form of varying schedules. If the company cannot predict their own requirements from their clients, they cannot be expected to do so for their employees.

It sucks, but it's just part of life, and if it makes you feel any better, the company thinks it sucks for them, too.

Yep, it sucks, the jobs out there are not geared towards the workers but towards the needs of the employers. You know what Mr. Logical? I used to think that being employed somewhere, working with employers was a 50/50 street. Boy was I wrong!

My dad who works as VP of his company has an unpredictable schedule as well. ****, they were pestering his ass during his vacation days because they were making ****ty decisions back at the place.

Nice try. Schedules are a **** show for everyone, but at least for the plebs on the bottom, no matter what, they just do the same **** over and over and over and don't have to adapt to much (although of course, they get paid a lot less because of that).

I think the OP needs to start a company that gauges its' success on the happiness of the employees. I'm not being facetious here, I mean it. If this is what people want then provide it and you should be wildly successful.

I own a business and I considr all of my employees friends. Our policies are very lax, lot's of flexibility and people are happy. When business is slow people work fewer hours. Sure, they make less money that way, but so do I. It also motivates them to work for the best interests of the business. When I had two employees and we ran out of work, one guy sat on a stool, smoked and waited for the next job. The o ther guy got on the phone and tried to find more work. Guess who got cut when we got slow....

There is a balance. But I have seen several of your threads complaining and no solutions. Be the ball Danny. Show us how it is done. I think I've struck a pretty good balance. Let's see what you can do. Just be realistic about the early days. I chose to make payroll instead of mortgage payments in the early years. It cost me my home, and later almost cost me my marriage, but 8 years from the beginning things are looking up. I recommend you state your ideals, risk all you have to make it happen, and show us the results. I'd be happy to help any way I can. Don't demand change, be change.

I honestly dont care if they have a rotating shift, but I cant wait at the phone for a month when I have other things I need to be doing. If they at least gave me a start date and a schedule, instead of saying "Wait by the phone" for a month, I would be fine if they shifted my schedule every week, but they dont. I seen a lot of people QUIT for this ****, and I totally understand WHY!

Also I have nothing to risk and no other options. There is nothing but warehouse/labor jobs and they are all in the populated cities. None of the company's in town are hiring and even when they do its like 50 people applying to the same damn shop, and they only hiring like 3-6 people. Which is ridiculous!

You need to move. Decide what you want to do, find a market for that, and go there. I'm one of 3 kids to a career air force dad and didn't go to college. But I do what I do better than most, have no debt and will retire reasonably well. Employers have no obligation to you unless you are valuable to them. BTW in my early years before I had marketable skills I was a masonry laborer for 2 1/2 years and absolutely loved it. There are days I look back at that simplicity and miss it.

Moving is easier said than done. Life is not as simple as everyone seems to assume it is. Also to move you have to make sure you have a job in the new city you move to. I dont have anywhere to stay when I move, so its here or living on the street. You might think everything is a free ticket but that is simply not HOW ANYTHING WORKS IN LIFE! You are not being very realistic.

I did it with a wife and a 6 week old from Chicago burbs to north Georgia. Six months of planning, when we got here the house wasn't ready, I had no job and about $3000 to my name. It was temporary. You plan, you set goals and you do what you have to do to achieve those goals. Work those crappy jobs just long enough to leave them behind.

Again, I have no where to stay. Also you dont realize it but if you have a kid and you are on the street you can go on welfare. I cant if things dont pan out. I dont have anywhere to stay, and I dont have enough money to move. So basically ill be living on the street till someone is willing to take me in.

I accommodate my employees when it comes to their hours.

It all works out.

We didn't get welfare, we got a hotel room. The next day we made a deal on a month to month rental until the house was done, and the next day I was walking in to every auto repair shop in town looking for work. That year for Christmas my wife and I got king sizes candy bars for each other. Great pictures. A month later we were closing on our house and I had a good job with benefits.

Again, I dont have the money, or anywhere to stay. So I will basically be asking someone to drop me off in a random city and start pan handling. That isnt very smart.

Right. Did you get the part about planning and goals?

That required either I stay with someone or I get a job over there. That has already been established. Its kind of stupid to go somewhere and hoping you find a job when there is a good chance you are probobly not going to get one. That is counting on luck, if you are smart YOU PLAN! Its just that simple.

You banked on the fact you would get a job, and in this economy there is no guarantee and even with the crappy Warehouse jobs they can make you wait up to months before they let you in. Which is complete crap. You kind of winged it and got lucky. My luck is never very good, so I not stupid enough to bank on it. Im more realistic than that.

Suit yourself. Good luck with that.

You seem to have an anticipatory negative answer to everything already. If you've already decided that you're screwed no matter what you do, then there is no hope.

Of course, there always is. Tech is offering you sensible advice...think about it.

It all works out.

It really generally does. I worked in an arena which never left me shackled under sick-making fluorescent lights from 7-5 and other blessed freedoms. But I also worked with drop-dead immutable deadlines.

And "drop-dead deadlines" is a legit workplace term, but I'm also not kidding: I've never gotten over the colleague who committed suicide and didn't leave a note to his wife or kids or grandkids...but who nevertheless met the &^*!# deadline.

i would find another job, it's unreasonable to not provide me a steady schedule unless i'm an on-call fill in, and i expect to be paid extra for that service i am providing. most jobs do not do that, but depending how much you're getting paid....

I have never worked in a warehouse, but every person i have ever known who works one has been a major pothead, maybe there is a connection.

Well its all warehouse work I been finding and so far they all been doing this crap. I got one with a company that pays 9 an hour and transferring to this other one which pays 11.50 an hour but they still have not given a start day or hours. The other one did interview and called me 4 days later and said "Can you start tomorrow". However refuses to give anyone hours, so its kind of a guess how long we will be working and for which days.

You made a stupid choice and got lucky, you cant always depend on luck in this world. I like to actually plan ahead so bad stuff dont happen. Unlike you I dont depend on LUCK.
Its like saying "Oh well I ran across the street and didnt get hit by a car, so you know its possible to live through it, you should try". It does not mean its smart.

You have no idea what choices I've made in my life, kid. I've said nary a word about myself, so you're just fictionalizing here.

Where do you get from my “You seem to have an anticipatory negative answer to everything already. If you’ve already decided that you’re screwed no matter what you do, then there is no hope” that I have made a stupid choice but somehow have gotten lucky?

What’s wrong with you? Don’t you understand plain English? Where did I mention any choices that I have ever made? Where did I mention luck?

Answer: Nowhere.

How bizarre…but revealing. Count me among those who have no sympathy for poor pitiful you. Not only do you have an excuse for everything, you also make stuff up to fit your little narrative.

But just so you’ll know, I’ve made plenty of mistakes in the course of my life, but my successes have come not from luck but from work. Planning ahead? Well, I dodged the predictable minefields—completed high school, didn’t get knocked up out of wedlock, and cleaned toilets, raked leaves, waited tables, and did whatever it took.

Without whining.

Suggest you do the same. ;)

I have a factory job and they issue the schedule a year at a time. You're given a copy of the schedule as part of your new-hire packet. A certain high-speed individual turns the schedule into a color-coded wallet size laminated card and sells them for $5ea to his co-workers :)

When I built power-line the schedule was easy: you're always working. No days off, typically 6am to sunset +an hour or two.
