My Father Had Heart Attack Number Three This Afternoon

Dad's going into surgery this morning. Wish us luck!

I saw my father go through similar, although he wasn't as lucky as yours.

I was just going to pray now for a friend of mine, and I'll be sure to pray for your father. We don't realize how precious life is until it is threatened.

Surgery's done. He's in stable condition (still under anesthesia) resting and recovering now. The doctors says his prognosis looks good given his young age and generally decent health.

It also seems that a lot of the problems he was having might have been a direct result of having a stent in place. Hopefully, now that he's had the bypass done and doesn't have to rely on the stent anymore, there will be less chance of a repeat of these kinds of situations.

Great news. Prayers are heard, and answered.

He had it around three o'clock. He's fine, thankfully. He's resting in the ICU at the moment. While he's not entirely comfortable, it doesn't seem to have done any major damage.

Any prayers you could all send our way would be appreciated.

I feel kind of numb about the whole thing, to be honest. I've been trying to keep my mind elsewhere so I don't have to focus on it. I was angry and worried at first, but after I learned he was stable, that subsided for the most part. I'm at home now taking care of the younger siblings while my mother sits with him at the hospital.

It's... It's just frustrating. He's only fifty, and this is his third attack so far. By all rights, the doctors say that the first should have killed him!

Yet... He still won't take care of himself. He rarely sleeps, he's only barely improved his diet since all of this started at age 42, doesn't exercise, regularly fails to take his medication, and insists on trying to tackle tasks which are physically beyond his condition. This latest episode was triggered when he tried to fix our broken air conditioner... Which simply happens to be located in a sweltering hot attic which regularly reaches temperatures of 110 - 120 degrees or more. His first was triggered when he tried to play basketball with a couple of 25 year olds at work, and the second because he overexerted himself unloading a truck full of merchandise. I've really got to wonder just how much longer his luck is going to hold out in this regard.

In any eventuality, I'm glad he's okay. If nothing else, these incidents drive home all the reasons why I really need to take care of myself, and maintain a decent degree of fitness and healthy discipline in my own life.

Good luck to your father and you and your family. I hope it will finally opens his eyes to any bad habits.

I am sorry to hear this. I hope your dad is feeling better and learns to care for himself. Were all three heart attacks in a short period of time?

I sometimes forget to take daily medication, but I have set an alarm on my cell phone. It's made a big difference for me.

I learnt the hard way it's incredibly difficult to get old men to change their habits. I've been in your situation and know how it feels. My thoughts are with you.

It does seem more common in men than women. My dad and my fiance's dad are the same. They don't listen to the doctor.

Thank you.

In answer to your question, they've taken place over a roughly eight year period. The first was in early 2008, the second in 2012, and this latest incident, obviously, in 2015.

Good Luck! Hope your Dad makes it in great shape! And good prognosis!

(Oops. Should have read the thread further. Oh well. The sentiments remains the same)

Thank you.

My grandpa had one heart attack, and he was fine. He had to take daily medication, and lived to be over 80 years old. My grandma was really strict with his meals, but let him eat unhealthy snacks and food every Friday.

I pray that your dad continues to improve.

Dad is finally home this afternoon. He's going to be mostly cooling his heels in a recliner for the next couple of weeks, but he's doing well apart from that.

I just want to thank everyone for their comments, prayers, thoughts, and support during this period. :)

Looks like he has some people caring about him. That will go a long way. I had my heart attack at the age of 44. Since then I've had two bypass surgeries - 1 with 4 grafts and 1 with 3 grafts. I've also had a couple of angioplasties. I'm now 71 years old and doing just fine. With good medical care coronary heart disease is something you can survive for quite a while. Good luck to him.

Wonderful news!

I'm glad it's turned out OK, and that he's home. It's sure to improve his mood and attitude, and recuperation.
