Men Only Hours for Grocery Stores

Also, as a girl who works at a grocery store, men only hours would be WAY too creepy to stomach for me. You have no idea how many guys think checking out is the perfect time to hit on someone. And come to your line, over and over, and you have to be nice, because it's your job. I just got off work, can you tell?

People actually do that? Creepy.

 That's funny.

I will admit that I try to choose female cashiers. Not because I'm scoping them out or hitting on them, but because I feel that women take more care in handling/bagging my stuff. IOW, they seem to care more. Older guys can be fine, too, but younger guys I try to avoid like the plague. They don't seem to care at all.

General observation. As with anything there will be exceptions to the rule, but unless I know the younger guy and know he's better then the average I'm going with the odds.

I frequent the same grocery stores around the same time, so I've gotten familiar with some of the cashiers. I'll go to someone I know. Since I'm a regular, they'll be a little friendlier, and sometimes give me some information on sales that I may have missed.

So what do you do with people who are in the express line "10 or less items" with way more than the express limit?

Can't believe they still exist? I haven't seen an express line in years in any UK supermarket chain now since self-service checkouts started.

We still have them in many stores.

We had Tesco stores here called Fresh and Easy. They were all self service. Great stores. I've always liked Tesco, but they sold them all maybe 3 years and were sold.

Why? they plainly don't work because you get some people who still don't read the signs and try taking a trolley through?

Tesco over-reached, they have a bad reputation in Poland and Slovakia after green meat was sold in their stores and I believe they made huge losses in the States; they just tried to apply the UK model without understanding the needs and differences of the US market.

They became unpopular here too and have lost a lot of market share - but also because they have been undercut by German stores like Aldi and Lidl.

Yeah, a coworker of mine had a guy ask her out while on the job, she declined, and now he keeps coming into her line, waits outside in the parking lot, etc. All while still hitting on her. It's VERY creepy.

Tesco made a big strategic error by maintaining their branding as a best value/lowest prices player, even when it became apparent that Lidl, Aldi, and even ASDA were cheaper and better value. Their clothes lines were a huge profit centre too...until Primark came along. They didn't adapt to a changing market and now they're struggling. Hurrah! Always hated Tesco - Margaret Thatcher's fund-raisers-in-chief.

The worst is EBT week.

I simply won't shop for the first week of the month.

They aren't yet universal here, fortunately, although they're coming. If I do shop in a big supermarket, I'll always opt for one with real cashiers. I hate having unidentified items in my bagging area!

EBT week? What's that, in the name of Tallulah?

Food stamps, WIC, etc. All of that money clears on the first of the month. So, for the entire week, I steer very clear of any form of shopping, because that's when the REAL asshats come out to shop.

Sadly, I work in the grocery industry, and while I no longer run a specific dept in the store, I am often at one store or another during the week of EBT, and still have to deal with the horror, though to a much lesser extent than I used to.

I'd have the manager deal with that guy. That's a real problem, and if they don't address it, the company is very likely to be liable. Tell your friend that.

Do those people tend to behave worse than everyone else?

Awww, he's just showing his undying lover for her.

Yes, I'm kidding. That is creepy.

Aldi and Lidl yeah.... Asda??? They're cheap but horrible. They've been a disaster since Walmart took them over. All quality control has gone out the window. I can't remember the last food award Asda won however Lidl and Aldi AND a lot of their products have won international awards. Most recently in whiskey, gin, meat and other produce.

Their clothes lines were a huge profit centre too...until Primark came along. They didn't adapt to a changing market and now they're struggling. Hurrah! Always hated Tesco - Margaret Thatcher's fund-raisers-in-chief.

Primark took a battering over using child labour for the delicate embroidery and lacework but you won't be surprised to hear me laugh at your battering Tesco over Thatcher. :2wave:

I don't pay any attention to food awards, I just go by the products I buy and the shopping experience, and ASDA's still preferable to Tesco. Of course, we don't have either here, but I do shop at Aldi quite regularly, even though it's not that much cheaper than the food-retailing market leader, Mercadona. I like both well enough, but will only buy fresh stuff from Mercadona.

Old habits die hard, although you might be surprised to learn that I have Barclays bank account. :3oops:

As for Primark, doesn't every mass clothing retailer depend on Far East sweatshop labour for its products? Do you know of one that doesn't?

So, what do EBT and WIC stand for?

Eelectronic 11111 Women with
Benefit 11111 Infant
Ttransfer 11111 Children

EBT is for food stamps and other tax funded benefit programs, WIC is the same, but EXTRA, specifically for women with infant children.

They, as a customer base, tend to be rude, crude, ignorant, entitled, and otherwise, simply unpleasant to have to deal with.

For some reason, this forum doesn't allow for the use of the space bar to separate text?

EBT or food stamp days, which in Georgia means odd days between the 5th and 25th of each month are generally always busy. It's especially fun when people's money doesn't get put on their card on the usually day, and we have to put back $400 worth of groceries.

WIC is basically a program to provide low income women and children with healthy foods. It's easy enough, but good god some people just don't get it. It's really hard trying to explain stuff when you add a language barrier in there, as well. It is especially fun when the people who don't understand it take it as a personal insult that when you tell them that they can't get Fruity Pebbles with their WIC voucher and proceed to yell at you for 10 minutes, and then yell at the manager when they tell them the same thing. The joys of retail.

None of that sounds fun at all for anyone involved. So these WIC vouchers have to be spent on certain things? And is every recipient issued with a list of what they can buy with them? Sounds quite demeaning. No wonder they get angry, that comes with humiliation.

Well, in Georgia, you get vouchers. And it's designed to provide the nutrients that a baby/young child and mother need. Like, you can get formula with them, baby food, lots of fruit, tuna, peanut butter, cheese, milk, etc. Things like that. So it makes sense. It's not just free money to eat off of, it has a purpose. You get a voucher, and it has what you can get with that voucher on it. A common voucher that nearly everyone on WIC gets is a dozen large eggs, 1% Milk, and 16oz of whole wheat bread.

So it is highly annoying when they don't follow the instructions. And they give you a list of the stuff that is WIC approved. Like, it's not brand specific, and you can substitute the bread for whole wheat tortillas for example.

Another common one is $8 or $10 worth of fruit. Any fruit, as long as it's not pre-sliced or cut up, because those things cost more. So, it's not like this humiliating thing, IMO. It serves a good purpose. It's just annoying when people get mad at me for something that I can't change.

Then they should get jobs and get off the public dole.

Should bring back the workhouse too, eh Mr Bumble?

No, we should hold people accountable for their own lives. If they refuse or are unable, then they get controls put on what they can do with money they didn't earn.
