What happened cartoons?

Back then they seemed so violent. What happened? Why do we never see cartoons like these anymore? Did the censors take control of the animation industry? Did the nanny statists complained about the level of violence?

I believe they went for shows that kids can more easily relate to. What they lost in violence, they made up for in other areas like darker and/or more relevant subject matter.
