Let's talk about Halloween!

Halloween is one of the coolest holidays, and it is my birthday, as well. i decorate, carve Jack 'o lanterns, and hand candy out to the kiddos.

Heh, today is my birthday. I buy candy for Halloween but we just eat it ourselves. :)

I don't live in a community with a big Hispanic population. I think that Dia de Los Muertos seems very cool, though.

Big here, I love the calvera's and the pan de muerto and all the great art and dioramas and such, and the families at the cemeteries, partying with their dead relatives and friends.

Do you decorate? Dress up? Have a costume picked out? Hate Halloween?

I love it - to me it's like a new beginning with lots of fun.... Of course most of us cannot wait until spring after the holidays.

Not I, said the Little Red Hen. Where I live, it's explosively hot during the summer, so Fall/Winter is the best time of year for me. It finally starts to cool off. Spring just means the start-up of the hot season again.

Good/sorry most like to think of October us scary and a precursor to the holidays

Which is odd considering some of us are used to heat and others are used to cold and snow...

IMO, I think spending the holidays in 70-85 weather would be ****ed up.

My husband was born and raised in New York. The first Halloween he spent down South, where our kids didn't actually have to wear coats over their costumes? He said it just didn't seem right.

I've a close friend who collects Mexican art and has framed dancing skeletons and etc. all over her house. Also several images of Our Lady of Guadalupe. What's weird is that she is a secularist who just likes this stuff. She says.

Maybe she's hiding something? Although the art is actually amazing. I love seeing all the beautifully painted skulls, etc.

Love Halloweenand yes, I do decorate not as much as I use to put out because I have more decorations than a person should have, lol.

One of my assistants at work is really into the Day of the Dead thing and she's an atheist. She's even having a Day of the Dead themed wedding coming up after the first of the year.

I bet I have more! I've got a whole shed full of professional-grade animatronics that I've made over the years that never get used anymore. I should probably see if any of it still works.

I like passing out candy to the Trick-or-Treaters. M&M's, Skittles, Nerds, Tootsie Rolls and Crabby Patties are more popular than the miniture candy bars. I have my favorites in the neighborhood and fix up special bags for them. It's pretty popular for the family to bring the dog along dressed in it's costume too. I make up doggie treat bags for them. It usually starts around 5:00 and is over at 7:30.

It doesn't look too bad... at least it's not goth and dark....

LOL, you would win that bet :)
I've been slowly passing along some of my holiday decorations to the younger family members when they get houses. They seem to get a kick out of them and they have other things to buy when they first time home owners.

Good morning, Vesper. :2wave:

The neighbor and I were just talking about this yesterday! As cold as it's been here, we wondered if we'd even get many beggars this year. I like to dress up myself since this is one of my favorite fun Holidays! When I was kid, we'd go out as soon as it was dark enough and we'd be out till we got tired--probably around 9 to 10 PM, and we'd usually fill an old pillowcase half full! And our parents didn't have to accompany us to keep us safe from being abducted, either! This night was for us; as eagerly anticipated as Christmas! Kids don't have the fun and freedom we used to have because it's just not as safe for them today, I guess, but where did all the weird mean people come from, Vesper? Putting razorblades in a little child's candy? God!

I love Halloween! We don't get any kids because we're on 5 acres and the house is too far from the road but I decorate the house from top to bottom anyway. In like every corner...and we have pumpkins everywhere too. Even the pets are decorated.

My kids still go out with their friends even though they're too old. They can't resist the candy. I can't resist what they bring home either!

I love the colors, the smell of Fall, the cold temps, the leaves...it's a fun holiday. Good movies, too. Going to watch Rosemary's Baby this weekend. Woohoo!

I remember those days too Polgara. The cold didn't bother us and we would be out to well past 9:00. Some folks would offer hot cider or hot chocolate and would make homemade treats like popcorn balls and caramel apples that you couldn't wait till you got home to eat. You ate it on the go with no fear of poison or pins or razorblades. But today you have to inspect everything your kid gets before they can eat it. Just another example how morally depraved our society has become.

We had one very elderly couple in our neighborhood that put out a bowl of apples on the porch - probably all they had to give. The bigger kids saw to it that those old folks were treated gently, by God, and there was no mischief allowed there. We all put a piece of candy in the bowl to replace the apple we took - fair is fair even if we didn't take an apple, and we policed ourselves because we were expected to have manners in those days! :sigh:

We had one elderly couple that put out a bowl of pennies and the group I ran with made sure everyone just took one. It's how you were raised to do things.

Ooooh, I had forgotten all about Rosemary's Baby - I'll have to watch that one too! Poltergeist for sure is on the programme, and anything else scary I can think of - we do have a few weeks yet to watch our rear ends get fat from all the sitting while eating popcorn, too! :lamo: Then we get to work it off by getting the house ready for Thanksgiving! Life is good!

Hey Pol, I also love Poltergeist, and we also snuggle in and watch the Halloween movies too, my favorite being the original one. The Exorcist also makes for great Halloween celebration too!
