Most of the new shows created now days are crappy reality shows. Why do Americans like to watch stuff like this? Can't we have a serious show for once? I would like a show that involves these serious themes.

-political intrigue
-political corruption
-war
-genocide
-any serious topic
-Sci Fi isn't complete without evil corporations and unethical science experiments

Back in the early 2000s we had awesome epic space operas like Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5. I used to see a lot of commercials promoting the Battlestar Galactica TV series back in 2004-05. I was never interested in sci fi until earlier this year when I played the first Mass Effect under the recommendation of a friend. I thought the Battle for the Citadel scene was epic.

Why don't we see shows like Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5 anymore? Did the network execs decide the genre was dead? I think we need more epic space battles on TV.

Mass Effect - Battle for the Citadel - Paragon - 1080p - YouTube

It was long thought that fantasy was a genre once thought reserved for geeks but Game of Thrones has garnered a huge audience. Perhaps a well written space opera with a huge budget could appeal to a diverse audience.

Do you think this genre should be revived?

What happened to TV? The American public. That's what happened to TV. Whatever gets the ratings, makes the cut. Unfortunately, the American public likes crap as a rule.

I like the old sci-fi tv shows well enough, but I'm fussy about all television nowadays. If a new series doesn't grab my attention in the first episode, I won't be watching the second.

I really just wanted to second your comments about the Citadel Ending Scenes in Mass Effect 1 being one of the best, most riveting, epic video game final battles ever! The Mass Effect trilogy is by far my favorite game ever, and although the final battle of Mass Effect 2 didn't measure up to the first game, it was exactly what it had to be to set up the entire Mass Effect 3, Battle for Earth, which is the finest video game I personally have ever played!

Don't stop with Mass Effect 1. Do the entire trilogy, all the DLC (which adds immensely to the richness) and import all your saves for even more dialogue choices and cool options! :)

I have several shows I really enjoy that are not reality TV, and not crap.

This is one of my new favorites:

Manhattan (TV Series 2014

It's about the race to build the first atomic bomb. Excellent show, great acting and writing.

Do yourself a favor and watch alittle PBS. The Roosevelt Family series is good.

Everyone has different tastes. I've never been into the sci fi stuff or battle star G. We have hundreds more channels than we did in past generations. We still have those shows on specific channels or on a random Sunday. I don't get bothered by what ppl like to watch on tv too much. To each his own.

Didn't CBS just come out with a show about a Secretary of State?

Seems to be modeled after the West Wing series.

Dude,

Breaking Bad
Homeland
Dexter
The Walking Dead
Game of Thrones
Mad Men
etc, etc.

We're in the Golden Age of TV.

Also, Mass Effect is awesome, and FemShep is better. :2razz:

The Suicide Mission was awesome! The Battle for the Citadel is great, but nothing beats the Suicide mission.

Okay, maybe the Liara sexy times, but that's obvious. :2razz:

Right. There is a lot of crap on tv, but there always has been. "My Mother the Car"? "Car 54, Where Are You?" Don't pretend that was some 'golden age'.

Like you say, there is a lot of good stuff still being made. Now, just like always, you need to be discerning, that's all.

I hate it when there's a popular show on TV that I've never watched, and everybody's like, "I can't believe you've never watched this show!1!11" Or even worse - if I watched it and didn't like it, "What is WRONG with you?"

I tried Breaking Bad. I did not like it. I have plans to try it again, once more, but if it bores me to death like it did the first time I watched it, I'll be done with it.

I tried House of Cards and while I thought it was OK, that's all it was - just OK. Nothing wonderful our groundbreaking, IMO. Too many good shows on that I like to bother with shows that everybody else tells me I should like.

I like House of Cards, but if it weren't for Kevin Spacey, I probably never would have given it a second look.

Kate Mara is my future wife.

He is the only reason I gave it a shot in the first place.

You ever watch American Horror Story? She was pretty awesome as the "side project" of the husband in Season 1.

I keep the TV on in another room but don't actually watch much and never have, not even when I was a kid. It's always so derivative--if one dumb dad with smartassed kids is working, let's have three more! And I've always hated laugh tracks. I've never seen "American Idol" or "Big Brother" or any reality show. I watched 5 minutes of "Duck Dynasty" just see what the fuss was about and didn't get it. Like any other genre--music, literature, whatever--90+ percent is crap. You just have to find the crap you like!

But there is good TV too. Some of the formulaic police procedurals spin good yarns and/or have well-developed characters, and there are quality children's programs and the History and Discovery Channels too. And "nostalgia" channels for those who think they remember a "golden age" of TV. ;)

I don't watch reality TV much - hate shows like the Kardashians, or the Real Housewives of wherever. I do like a handful of competition shows, like Chopped, or Hell's Kitchen, or America's Got Talent. Although I was pretty upset with the winner of AGT this year.
This girl? She should have won. She was amazing. Has everything - looks, the voice, everything --

Instead, Vegas gets another magician.

I dont even keep a tv running in another room anymore. When dh was here, he always had a television on if he was awake. He seemed to like the noise. Now that its just me, the tv is on for a few minutes in the morning to listen to a little news, and s few minutes when I go to bed at night, just to dull me a little and help me get to sleep.

How much is your cable TV bill every month? Having both HBO and Showtime must run that bill up a bit I bet.

What, it didn't brainwash you too?

 No, I tried. I did. I will give it one more shot, but only because everyone is telling me I am missing a great show. But if everyone wasn't telling me to give it another shot, I'd be done with it.

there are some good shows on regular channels

not a fan of the spin offs, but ncis is great

person of interest caught my interest

and sheldon cooper and the gang are always good for a half hour of goofball laughs

some of the better shows are coming out on cable, and other networks

netflix is great....we are finally getting to see a number of shows we missed completely

we are halfway through breaking bad.....i think it is really well done

there is a lot of crap.....

we try to get a synopsis from reviewers on whether or not we think we will like a show

and we saw the first episode of the tea leoni as sec of state the other night.....madame secretary i think is the name

it has possibilities

We have finished Season One, and it was great. We need to get back into it.

Been watching that, 2 1/2 of the episodes so far. Excellent show, learning so much.
