Why Are People Going To Switzerland To Kill Themselves?

Why would you go somewhere to kill yourself, when a bullet to the head will work anywhere you happen to be, and is quick?

Bullet in the head is no guarantee it ends there.

They should be going to Detroit

Because many people can't do it on their own.

I'm in 2 minds about it.

Most people who go there are old people who are either terminally ill with cancer and there's nothing to be done or just plain old sick or just too old to function and dont' wanna be a burden on those around them.

So I'm in 2 minds about it because I think I would like to do that too when I'll be too old to function properly... but then again... it's still suicide... so I don't know. But from a legal perspective, I think it should be legal. Let people make their choices.

Nah, .... unassisted euthanasia... a quite pragmatic solution in some circumstances

Celebrate life

Actually it's assisted suicide, not unassisted, in switzerland.

unassisted suicide is just... suicide.

Or if this is what you are meaning, then my bad.

Yes, celebrate life, live life... but there comes a point when you're unable to do that properly. So yeah, up to everyone to make their own decision.

Say what?

If you have Parkinson's, ALS, MS or some other disease that disrupts motor functions, then most other forms of suicide aren't guaranteed to work, and probably won't be quick.

Physician-assisted suicide also makes sure the individual is of sound mind, is capable of making the decision, isn't being pressured into it by family, and will be peaceful and painless. If one of my relatives was going to engage in euthanasia, I'd much rather not have them do it in an incredibly violent and disruptive fashion.

Why would you encourage suicide at all?

Is there something inherently wrong with suicide. We come into this world with no say on the matter, but now that we are here we can end it whenever we want. I have already made the terms on what I'm unwilling to live with and when the time comes I'm ending it myself.

Life is a gift from God. We may differ in opinion but I respect your opinion.

I'm not entirely convinced it's a gift. Maybe when you're young it's a gift, but when your body starts to lose function I think the gift aspect of it no longer exists. There is an 86 year old woman that lives near me that has told she wishes god would end her life and without her even telling me I can guess why she holds that view. It's sad, but she has no one left in this world and her body is failing her.

I respect that. However, God will take her when He is ready. Never question His plan.
