George Harrison Memorial Tree Overrun and Killed By... Beetles

>"If only the beetles had let it be...

In a strange, ironic twist of fate, the pine tree planted in 2004 in memory of George Harrison in Los Angeles will need to be replanted because the original tree died as a result of insect infestation.

From the Los Angeles Times: "The memorial tree in Griffith Park had grown to more than 10 feet tall as of 2013, but LaBonge said the tree beetle onslaught was too much for the tree. Trees in Griffith Park have occasionally been the victims of bark beetles and ladybug beetles, among other tree-unfriendly creatures."

A date has yet to be set for the replanting."<

Wow. Is that ever ironic.

Greetings, MaggieD. :2wave:

I was just about to post the same thing! To think that beatles were the cause is a weird twist of fate! I have planted many trees in my life - some have thrived and some have not. Maybe they should switch to something inorganic, since this is a memorial to a star, and should last longer than 10 years! His career lasted longer than that tree did!

You're probably right, but it influenced the naming of numerous of other bands during the British Invasion era and late 60's, the Turtles, the Yardbirds, the Birds, the Frogs, etc.

Many bands started out under other names. Led Zeppelin at first was the New Yardbirds.

The Beach Boys were originally the Pendleton's, named after a wool shirt worn by surfers in the South Bay in California during the late 50's and 60's.

Van Halen use to be Mammoth during the early and mid 70's.

Hey Polgara :2wave:

The bark beetle has been decimating in California for over the past 15 or so years.

My family has 20 + acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, mostly oaks but also numerous Pinyons, Jeffrey, Sugar Pines etc.
The Bark Beetle go after pines. They kill them and you have to cut down the beetle infested tree and dispose of the tree so the beetles don't spread.

About 12 years ago we had about six trees killed by Bark Beetles. Cutting down a tree that's 30 to 50 feet high, not that expensive if you own a chainsaw that can get the job done. Otherwise you have to hire someone like Sawyerlog who's a professional to cut down the tree and cut it up for disposal. (You can't use the wood for fire wood.) You're looking at $1,200 to $2,000 per tree.
It was expensive. Not cutting down the tree but disposing of the wood.

If you can't burn them, how do you dispose of them? Has the drought had any effect on the beetles?

Boogaloo beetles for sure

I think that's where most of the money went for, disposing of the wood. I have no idea what they did with the wood. Probably sold it to a firewood business just down the Hill from Griffith Park.

My guess the wood was treated with an insecticide and disposed at a garbage dump.

Which reminds me of Charlie Manson and his first record demo.

Charlie was well known in the Hollywood record industry during the 60's. Most Vietnam war era age teens and young adults living in the western area of L.A. County either knew of or knew Manson or the "Family" or someone who did.

He was a better than average guitar player who learned to play the guitar while in federal prison from Alvin Karpis one of the most infamous Depression era gangsters. Most in the rock era of the 60's in the Hollywood Hills and Sunset Strip knew of Charlie Manson. It was the Beach Boys who helped to produce Manson's first demo.

Charlie Manson was one of the first liberal eviormentalist activist.

I am right. Beatles

Not Beetles

Also, Charles Manson finally got to hear the White Album on CD. He said "Wow, it is so clear, and the music is so clean, I guess I was wrong about killing everyone and trying to start a revolution!"

(that is a joke)

George's family still has a really nice estate on Maui, near Hana, nice place.

Do we know each other ?

I have already discovered or rehooked up with two individuals I either knew or crossed paths with during the 60's or 70's on the DP.

I've personally known the Arias family back during the mid/late 60's when the Hawrthorne crew would occupy Rosecrans Beach and 26th Street in Manhattan Beach and Olivia's younger brother became a good friend. This is before Olivia worked at Capitol Records and I spent many hours at the Arias's home. If I remember it was just across the street on the north side of Hawthorne High School football field.

A couple of years after my tour in Nam I was invited to the Harrison's home. ( I remember having to remove my shoes at the door.) George is defiantly on my most respected people I have ever known list. Would cross paths with him numerous times during the 70's and 80's.

George Harrison is so respected by those who knew him, nobody says **** about him.
Gilbert Airas, Olivia's younger brother would over see George's property on Maui. I still think he does today, I haven't talked to him in over fifteen years

If we know each other or have crossed paths, do you remember the "Ear Drum" ( at La Cienega and Century) where everyone who had made it in the music industry and had the money bought their McIntosh sound systems ?

Nope, just a lot of trips to Maui and an ardent Beatles fan. Been to Vietnam twice...but as a tourist.

Most people aren't aware of Harrison's property holdings, they don't go beyond Maui. Back in 1976 I got cold cocked on the Harrison's pig farm in Shasta County. "Come up to Reading Rat, there are more girls than bous and there are so many jobs.

The truth was, the oldest unmarried girl was under 18 yeas of age and there were no girls of 18 who wasn't married. And there were no jobs because it was during the liberal eviormental activist who lived in urban America who put a ****ing owl above a human. So the Spotted Owl became America's main concern. So all of the lumber mills closed and all of the
lumber jacks found themselves out of a job, the majority went on the dole.

Today the largest employer in Shasta County is the government.

I wasn't aware that Hawaiians or hollies had a hard-on that the Harrirson owned property on Maui. And he rarely spent time on the "Islands."

Saw it from the air in a small plane, and have drove around the area. Pretty restricted, Oprah had an estate nearby. Hana is great, but lots of private beaches. I prefer the big island or Kauai, I know all the hidden spots there (except for the ones you have to reach on a 4x4).

Blue Oyster Cult formerly known as Soft White Underbellies. Wise decision in that name change :)

Harrison was widely known for having a wry sense of humor. You get the feeling he would have laughed at this.

Maybe Janet Jackson can die by jumping out of a plane with a parachute that doesn't open. Call it a "wardrobe malfunction".

Weren't the Yardbirds named after Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker?
