Actually, that's not true. Everyone in my family smoked, everyone I knew smoked, hell my father got cigs free from the army during WW2 and Korea. Back then, just about everyone smoked and tobacco products were hawked on every billboard and tv program of the day. These people had no clue how dangerous cigarettes were. Many decades later, when I was a teen I also smoked... as did just about everyone I knew. By the time cig packs started carrying warnings and surgeon generals were issuing reports about exactly what cigarette smoke did to a person's lungs, I had been hooked for two decades.

So no, not everyone who smokes or smoked knew what cigarettes would do to them.
Guess people around my generation are lucky in that regard.

That is so true. I am a former smoker, and although so many ex-smokers take a really judgemental and intolerant view toward smokers, once they have quit, it doesn't bother me at all to be around it. It's a habit just like so many other things are, and it's certainly not a moral issue.

My family had that dynamic. Patty and Polly are identical twins, Patty is my grandma and Polly is my great aunt. They've always been very close and both smoked when they were younger. My grandma quit and Polly kept smoking, they had no problems with each other and my great uncle would smoke his pipe at the family dinner table. There wasn't much judgement. The issue came when my aunt Polly got cancer from her smoking. She had to quit and she's recovered now but we really didn't judge anyone for her smoking. She was a loved family member that chose to have a bad habit, and when she stopped we all helped her.

I just dislike the judgement and hate people spew towards smokers as if they run abusive puppy mills or harm kids. They are adults engaging in a bad health habit, nothing more.

I heard something similar from my father back when he quit about 2 decades ago. He said he never knew how bad they were for your health. And my grandma too. She ended up with cancer of the larynx. She survived the surgery, chemo and radiation and lived another half a century, but had to breathe through a hole in her neck. She said she never knew that cigarettes caused cancer.

I am talking about the last couple of generations at least from the '70s on. If people don't know the damage cigs do, they are living ina cave or they purposely don't want to know.

repeating myself on this, but the Allen Carr book is the best way to go. best part : it's somewhat likely that your library has it.

I'm repeating myself from another thread here, but Smokeaway helped me quit.

l had quitted smoking nearly 3 4 years ago but l began to absorb this posion a few months ago because of stress.l am known for being a strong willed person but l lost it..l promised myself to get rid of the enemy soon.

l know you should really want to quit it if you want to quit.no other thing helps you

I have tried to quit many times. I tried over the counter stuff, patches, but refused drugs to do it. I also tried cold turkey. I have always failed. And I fail because I really don't want to quit and the only way one can truly quit is because they WANT to more than anything. And I guess I don't want to. So...I will keep puffing until I get to that point..if ever.
