Yay!!!!!!! Not only do I have to suffer through weekly profiles of girls as they travel through pregnancy on Facebook, but now? Pictures taken at a Gender Reveal Party. It's a boy!!!

Is it just me, or are young people really as narcissistic as I think they are?

Oh. This was not what I thought it was......

I think many from my generation are narcissistic. Maybe not the majority, but the ones that are have become very vocal about it with social media. I can count on the same people alerting me every time they go to the gym, posting pictures everyday of a "selfie" when they think they look good, post pictures of every healthy thing they eat and try to get as much attention focused on them as possible. Seldom do they actually talk to others or post on other's content since the discussion is not about themselves or how fantastic their life is. I understand people being happy and excited to have babies, but I know many girls who post their baby bumps every week, post about their baby's progress nearly every day, talk about how bad their pregnancy is and complain about their partners not being supportive enough, making a big deal about the gender and all the other things. People have similar behavior with engagements/weddings too and it's just annoying in a narcissistic way. I'm totally fine with people sharing that, but when it becomes daily spam it begins to annoy me. Then again, it's social media.

No, we're as narcissistic as every other generation, we just have the tech to share!

Apparently you hold a party at a restaurant where the new mom/dad-to-be reveal whether they're having a boy or a girl and invite all your friends.

Welcome to earth.

It is a misnamed gathering to reveal the sex of one's child before it is born.

It reminds me of little kids:

"Watch me color!!!!"

"Dad!!! Watch me cannonball!!! Dad!!!!!! Dad!!!!! WATCH!!!!!"

Swear to God. Maybe it's arrested development...

This is hilarious. Reality is whatever you want it to be an any particular moment. Science!!!!

Meanwhile, normal people actually live in reality:

Research on NPD suggests that Americans in their 20s are three times as likely to have experienced NPD than people over age 60. Comparing similar-aged people across decades also shows a dramatic increase in narcissism.

For the past three decades or a little more, researchers have been assessing both narcissism and empathy using questionnaires developed in the late 1970s. The questionnaire designed to assess narcissism is the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI).. . . .

Over the years, these questionnaires have been administered to many samples of college students, and analyses that bring all of the data together reveal that the average narcissism score has been steadily increasing and the average empathy score has been steadily decreasing ever since the questionnaires were developed [3.] The changes are highly significant statistically and sufficiently large that approximately 70 percent of students today score higher on narcissism and lower on empathy than did the average student thirty years ago.

Increases in narcissism: Four cross-sectional, one retrospective, and four over-time datasets are consistent with higher narcissism among those in more recent (younger) generations. These use three different measures of narcissism (the NPI, the California Psychological Inventory, and a clinical interview for Narcissistic Personality disorder) and occur across several age groups and cultures:

A certain segment of it is, yes. There's kind of a dichotomy going on: people who just rejecting the entire thing, and then people who are looking to capitalize on it as much as they can.

The latter are getting frankly disgusting in their entitlement. Demanding people spend thousands of dollars just to attend their weddings, demanding not just presents but also large sums cold hard cash, throwing 3 or 4 different "parties" during the course of pregnancy and expecting gifts and money at all of them, expecting parents to buy their house, on and on it goes.

I just don't even respond to **** like this. Is this about gathering people you love to celebrate, or just trying to make yourself entitled royalty for a day? Shove it.

Isn't that illegal or something? I mean, how can you tell that a baby is male or female just because of their anatomy? Shouldn't this kind of party be held off until the kid is out of college for a few years and really has time to decide for themselves which of the freshly minted 37 or so genders they wish to choose from (or, better yet, just let them make up their own because 37 is pretty limiting).

LOL
When they get it wrong is there a 'gender reveal correction party'

"Sorry - John's a girl."

Whoopidy do. I don't get involved in the over hype of 'having a baby' - I even rolled my eyes when my sister did this big 'reveal of being pregnant' - Just make some phone calls and say "I'm pregnant" . . . not that hard. She printed up T-shirts that said "I'm a big brother" for one of her kids. Gesus.

NPD? There's a psychological term for this stuff?

I can see it now.... "I'm not an asshole! I've just got NPD!"

This only happens today because young men are not men anymore. Some of the younger guys at work were surprised to find out from me and few of the other older guys that we NEVER go to baby showers, even ones we have been invited to; we leave that stuff up to our wives. These younger guys were also apparently shocked to find out that none of us older guys felt that this behavior was rude. In fact when polled, most of the older guys felt it was rude and presumptions to even ask other men to attend a baby shower; to take personal time to watch women open up boxes of baby clothes and breast pumps. What kind of man would volunteer for that kind of torture?

I guess this gender reveal party stuff is just more of the same madness. I guess I'm just an old Neanderthal, but none of this has any interest for me. So if I were to tell someone that I don't care what gender their child is am I'm rude? I'll bet these parents are the same types who will have bumper stickers on their cars saying crap like, "our child is an honor student" blah-blah-blah.

Kids in today's world have enough screwed up things to deal with. Too bad for most of them having screwed up infantile parents is the biggest problem.

What!!??

When did guys start going to baby showers? Where is this happening?

Yeah....I don't go to baby showers. My wife does. And I can usually convince her to take the kids.

And then it's beer time.

What!!??

It happens all the time in my social circle. Seeing how I was born a curmudgeon, I don't partake and had to educate my wife about this to desocialize her from our generation's programming.

I remember talking to one of my grandpas about life in the old days and I still remember his comment - there wasn't a big need for events to celebrate the passages of life, things like big weddings, etc. because you were a boy when you were single and you became a man when you got married. Same with women. It was the act of getting married, the act of having a baby, which moved you into a new status. Today it is the wedding, the baby shower, which has the social impact. Now it's the "gender reveal party" - thankfully I missed the emergence of this celebration when I became a dad.

Got to go - there's kids on my lawn. Bah humbug.

:lamo Your Kidding, right? WOW! that's like the narcissistic hedonism of the 60s and early 70s hippies, on steroids, a thousand fold. It's that same "it's all about me", "if it feels good do it; turn on, tune in and drop out with an added side order of the self important "everybody, look at me!"

I've noticed this for some years but it seems to have become epidemic..... probably an extension of "so called hippie values" taught by parents.. i.e no delayed gratification; I want it and I deserve it NOW if only because I exist...

Amazing!

Sad and hilarious at the same time..

"Take me to your leader I have questions!"

NPD is a real cluster B personality disorder and it's more than just being narcissistic. One of the key points is that people with NPD generally lack empathy for others and tend to lash out more with hurtful statements against others. It's a bit more severe than being a general narcissist.

I'm a little confused, since when do pregnant women NOT talk about their pregnancies with their friends? Since when is Facebook NOT a place to share things with friends? And lastly, who is forcing you to participate in these Facebook pages?
