I'm not a huge pet person - I like them and loved my dogs and pets that I had over the years but this story makes me want to find this asshole and break his kneecaps.

What kind of piece of **** asshole does this? I want to find the name of this jerk and tell them off. I can only hope some karma exists that whoever this is when they get old, gets discarded by whoever was caring for them.

I thought "manny" was still adoptable but I just realized the following:

The rescue agency shared the devastating news on Friday morning:

Manny passed away in his sleep early this morning. On a soft bed with his foster mama on the couch next to him. He just left us-just like that. There was so much more we wanted to show him-a life he probably never even realized existed. Just two nights ago I was on my couch weeping over a video of him in the Lancaster Shelter and was planning an escape route for him. Today he is gone and he has left so many with broken hearts. Honestly, I am still in a bit of shock.

If there is a God, he judges us by how we treat our pets. I'm sure of it - because they are surely "the least of us".
 
That is sad. What an awful story. How could this guy just give up on his dog, just because it's older? I have a 9 year old dog, too, and she's sick, and I couldn't imagine giving her away. If he wanted a younger dog, why not get Manny a playmate? Why get rid of him, just because he's older, and needs more care?
 
There was also a story featurd on yahoo news of an elderly couple that turned in their dog because they couldn't afford to have him put down. The story went on to say an organization stepped up, helped the little guy and made him well. As a life long dog owner in could t imagine reaching that state of horror. God Bless private organizations full if people willing to help like that.
 
Labradors are so intelligent and loyal and kind and sensitive. It hurts my heart to read that, although we don't really have the whole story I suppose.

I share your sentiments here - I hope the shelter that took in this senior dog informs the authorities and the "new, younger dogs" are taken away before they are allowed to suffer the same fate.

We had a senior couple here this week who had to turn in their aging dog because they're pensioners and couldn't afford the medical treatment the dog needed - it broke their hearts to do so, but they had no choice - even that makes me angry that a vet wouldn't find a way to help out two pensioners that want to keep their dog but can't afford treatment.

I don't understand how a lot of people live with themselves.

Given the new information, I'm wondering if the guy just didn't have the heart or money to have the dog put down, and knew he'd get another pound puppy so decided to leave the euthanasia to the shelter figuring the dog wouldn't get adopted. And honestly if the story hadn't been put up online, I bet he wouldn't have been fostered or adopted.

I know it seems heartless, but we don't really know the circumstance and I can imagine a few that would not, imo, be heartless. Not a choice I'd make, but not heartless.

What is wrong with people? What. Is. Wrong. With. Them?

That makes me so mad. They should be banned from every shelter and pet store in the damn state. That poor pup. He obviously had more love for them in his little toe than they had for him in their whole bodies.

An animal too sick to be saved is usually pretty apparent. And someone in that kind of situation would have simply said so, rather than just saying they were gonna "get a new one." People who actually care are usually pretty distraught about being unable to afford vet bills.

Besides that, it actually isn't uncommon for old animals to die in shelters, even when they have no health problems. They get really attached to us people folk, and losing us can be enough to just make them lay down and go to sleep. Conversely, having us can make them fight age more than they might otherwise do. I've seen both, and people do it too.

I agree all that is possible and even likely, however, I've known some pet owners that just don't know how to handle end of life and do really stupid things. So I'm hesitant to pass judgement on this without more information from the man himself.
 
This story literally makes me ill. That poor, sweet dog was clearly so devastated by being abandoned that he simply died of a broken heart. I can't even begin to fathom the cold, unfeeling mindset that one must have to have done such a horrible thing to an animal that I have no doubt loved his master unconditionally for his entire life.

I'm about ready to cry just thinking of what that poor dog must have gone through. :(

My Cat's got a good laugh out of your post when I read it to them. Then they placed their lunch order (Fancy Feast Seafood Combo) and went back to napping on their heated blanky.

My time in cat rescue managed to lower my opinion of humans to depths I had not previously imagined. At least these jerks took him to a shelter instead of abandoning him in a parking lot, like so many others do.

Not everyone relates to their pets the way we do Maggie. We love them. We communicate with them. Some people just have them around, like furniture.

Just as pathetic though. Dogs love their owners no strings attached - and to just throw them out for something new is pathetic because they are elderly is a sin. Kids who put away their parents in homes because they can't be bothered are just as despicable.

Dogs don't know why, though. Wives can speculate, if they don't already know. All that dog knew is that the person he'd been with for a very long time, gave him away. One morning, he's at home, nice and warm, and the next morning, he's in a cold shelter crate.

Dogs forget and, yes, they do not know what's going on. I think that makes it easier. Ignorance is bliss.

BTW, it was more of a joke than anything, but there is a lot of truth to it.

That old dog was so lovely and so unhappy. How many times must he have comforted people with his big old cuddles. :(

Hmmm...plenty serial killers start out by being cruel to animals and then move on to much worse things. People who are cruel to animals are immediately suspect, in my view.:shock:

However, I have many friends who seem decent enough but just don't like animals. Some haven't been exposed to any and some are allergic etc.

I always find that lack of empathy disturbing though. My own mother, God rest her and she was a lovely woman in many ways, but her attitude to animals was quite... different. At 16, I had a kitten which was somewhat messy around the house. It disappeared and I spent days looking for it over miles... To complicate things, the woman across the road had a German Shepherd which had 8 pups (crossed with Saint Bernard, huge dogs) and then sadly the dog got her head stuck in a charcoal bin and died, leaving the pups very young and motherless. I ended up feeding the pups while the woman was at work and then when the dogs got older, they bust out of the enclosure and made their way to my house every day to loll about the verandah waiting for me to appear. Anyway, I held the pups (which were now gigantic) responsible for the disappearing kitten, I was examining their teeth for evidence...nothing was ever found. Years later, I was in the kitchen and overheard my Mother's friend talking about problems with a destructive cat tearing curtains and so on, her family loved the cat and she was stuck with it. My Mother told her we had a cat nuisance and she took it to the vet and after his advice that its behaviour couldn't be changed, she had it put down and just didn't tell anyone.

My fecking cat.

Some time later my Dad died and the old labrador they had for 10 years used to go around the house bereft looking for Dad. My Mum then said she was going to have the dog put down because it was making her upset.

Truth is, she never really liked animals. We only had them because I love them and my Dad was quite keen also.

I took the dog to my house where he lived a good few happy years more.

:( At least he got a few good years with you. My father was never a fan of animals. I couldn't say that he'd ever go to the extreme of having it put down because I don't know. We were never allowed pets when we were younger. Could be why I have a hard time bonding with pets. I have my older shepherd that I love, and we got a puppy about a month ago, and I absolutely adore this little bastard. Those are probably the only 2 dogs I've ever had that I truly loved.
