OK, for anyone who understands basic Spanish, please help me. I took an exam, and got the following section wrong. Every single one of them was wrong.

Would a disinterested 3rd (or 4th or 5th or 20th ;) ) party look at this and tell me what you think the section is asking for? I interpreted it in one way, and got them wrong. When I asked what I did wrong, she gave me a different answer than what I had interpreted the assignment to be.

If you were to get this on an exam, what would you do? I'd like a couple of answers before I give you her reason for why I got them all wrong.

If I did it wrong, I won't dispute it but from what I can see, I did it correctly.

So he's got vocabulary, speech and cultural history at 10:30, Hemingway and Shakespeare at 1:00, Biology at 8:00, art at 3:00, computers at 9:30 and economics at 2:00

I don't see the problem

Read the directions very carefully. She told me I read the directions incorrectly.

What do you think the directions are saying for me to do?

Seems okay to me as well.

Day-um... I'm stumped.... la profesora es un purista como debería ser? si ?

Okay, I'm 100% fluent in both Spanish and English and if I had taken the test I would have done exactly what you did. I'm not exactly sure what else the instructions are supposed to mean.
Also, that's six classes in total, not five.

I agree with everyone else, I would've answered exactly as you did.

I think they're looking to see whether you know the vocabulary for the subjects Arturo is taking, hence...

1. La literatura (inglesa?)
2 La biología
3. La historia del arte
4. La informática
5. Las ciencias económicas

It's quite a poorly explained test, but I think that's probably what they were looking for. I hope that helps.

Oh, I see what you're seeing now that you mention it. It's in this sentence, which is sort of poorly written, imo.

Give the names of the classes he takes, according to their description.

Yep, boy, that escaped many on here. The "according to the their description" does seem to imply to use the description, but I guess the comma and lack of knowledge as to a vocabulary list, which the OP might be privy to, yep.... I see it. Thank you. Well done.

That's it. Good catch.

Yes, Anda. That is what she was looking for. But I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who considers this poorly explained.

This is what I responded to her, when she emailed me back explaining what she was looking for:

I would like further explanation on this, because this is extremely confusing.

The directions stated:

Read the passage describing Arturo’s schedule, and then fill in the chart with the information in the order it appears in the selection. Give the names of the classes he takes, according to their descriptions. Follow the model closely.

The following passage spoke of, for example, what Arturo did on Monday and Wednesday.

Los lunes y miércoles aprende (learns) el vocabulario, los verbos y la cultura hispana a las diez y media y estudia (studies) las obras de (the works of ) Hemingway y Shakespeare a la una.

Now, based on the directions, "give the names of the classes he takes, according to their descriptions," -- Dr. ----- , I don't mean to be a whiner, but I thought I did that. It asked for the names of the classes he took, according to their descriptions.

I took, based on the passage to mean (and please forgive my rudimentary translation) --

On Monday and Wednesday, Arturo leans vocabulary, verbs and Hispanic culture at 10:30, and studies the works of Hemingway and Shakespeare at one.

Based on the above passage, it looks as though it was asking what he was taking, and when. I did that correctly.

Honestly, the above is the problem with online classes. I couldn't walk up to your desk in the middle of this exam and get clarification. This is extremely frustrating, because I did what I thought the directions asked me to do.

I think though that the example given before #1 in the table, sort of clears it up as well. I'm not sure if I was your prof I'd back down. Yes, it was poorly written, but there is more there, and yes, a lot of us missed it, but that just means a lot of us were careless in reading thoroughly.

She told me that I'm not the only one who misunderstood. You would think that, with a lot of people making the exact same mistake, she'd at least give partial credit or something. She said that at the en of the term, we'll get to retake 2 of our exams, so maybe I'll do this one. Still frustrating, though.
