I'm not a big sports fan but I always watch the super bowl and the world series. WTF is the deal with the beards? Baseball players and cow boys were always clean cut as a rule and these guys look ridiculous. You're baseball players not loggers and if you want a beard grow a freakin beard not one of these weird facial hair art things. I swear it's about enough to make me shave my beard off.

Yeah. Gomes has just gone nuts. There's no good reason for that mess. Napoli is the other one that's just out of hand and I don't see how Saltalamacchia can wear that mask for 9 innings but at least his beard fits with that mop of hair.

For Boston, I assume that it was a giant middle finger to the Yankees, owned by Steinbrenner - who always insisted that his players be very clean-cut and clean-shaven.

It's the playoff beard. Athletes are superstitious and won't do anything different from what they've done before. That's why you'll see players take the same number of practice swings, etc.

The playoff beard is a popular tradition in hockey where players would not shave during the playoffs. I think the Red Sox have had it all year, which is odd. If they win the series, you'll start to see other teams doing the same. The Red Sox were always known for having less stringent grooming requirements than say the Yankees. When Johnny Damon went from the Sox to the Yankees, he had to get a haircut and shave to make The Boss happy. The most notable exception to the Yankees "no facial hair" rule was Don Mattingly, who was allowed to keep his 'stache.

Better get used to them because they aren't coming off until after the WS. :)

Who cares, as long as it doesn't effect their game.

I love the Cardinals and will always root for them, but I think the Sox beards are awesome. :)

I agree with awesome beards part. I don't really like beards, but that's just a thing they do, and if it doesn't hurt their playing then I don't see that it's a big deal.

What really bugs me is not every man can grow a beard. Some of those guys with erratic patches of beard and bald spots just looks kinda strange. If you can't grow a beard don't grow a beard and I still say baseball players and cow boys should be clean shaven.

When I grew up all players were clean shaven, but started to change with the Oakland A's and in particular Rollie Fingers and his handlebar mustache. Beards came next. What a player looks like doesn't bother me, it is what they can do on the field.

I have been without TV a while but last night I tuned in for the world series and I just found it distracting so I thought it was worth a rant, good game though.

I agree. If it doesn't interfere with the game, then I don't think it's a big deal.

If you can't be there in person, baseball is a game to be listened to on the radio. I really enjoy listening to the game, but on TV sometimes I get bored.

You know what, that is an excellent point! I remember listening to games glued to the radio. Maybe I'll try that again.

It is boring to watch on television sometimes. I hate changing it to something else because usually when I do that, it seems like something important happens.

It's a team unity thing.

baseball is the best game to watch in person, but it's not that good on television because you can't take in the whole field.

I've never been to an actual game before, unless you count the Pawtucket Paw Sox LOL! I've never been to Fenway Park before. It's a pretty pricey day.

I grew up and became a baseball fan back in the mid 50's when one could tune in and get a bunch of MLB games on the radio. Even way down here in Georgia. The only national telecast was the Game of the Week with Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese. To get a game on TV you basically had to live in the city where the game was taking place or in the visiting team city and not all teams back then televised their away games.

I think another reason why I like the radio, I don't have to be glued to the TV. I can walk around and do things, even work etc. Many times I'll have the radio out in the yard while I work out there or in the garage working on a lawn mower or something.

I only go a few times each year. I enjoy it very much.
