    Hurricane question

Anyone ever stick it out during a hurricane or a tropical storm? Once again, my little town is in the "cone of concern" ( I love how they make up these terms) and I found out that my insurance doesn't include flood insurance. It'll take 30 days for it to go into effect.

How far inland does the storm surge usually go?

Depends on the strength of the storm, where the NE Quadrant is in relation to you and the tides, what's between you and the coast.

Here's some useful thins for you to consider:

Do you like life? Yes or No

If Yes, prepare to evacuate on any Hurricane over a Cat 1

If No, Do nothing and hang out at home.

Seriously though, watch the storm, this one, if it holds track shouldn't be a massive system, it'll be fast moving by the time it hits Florida and 5 miles back, you "should" be all right. However, remember other things that spawn in Hurricanes, massive amounts of rain, high winds, and yes the occasional tornado. Though to be fair those are rarely big ropes they ARE tornadoes. If you are going to stick it out, go now, right now (you should have done this much sooner but we'll let that pass) board up your windows, get a at least 5 days of food and clean water PER PERSON in the home. Fill up a spare bathtub with water for bathing. If the storm wrecks enough havoc on your area you could be without power and running water for several days, roads could be impaired by debris. Also if you're staying, make sure you have some home defense, I know that sounds paranoid, it's not. And I don't mean a bat, a good shotgun is enough.

If they announce mandatory evacuation, GO!

Have a plan now and where you'll go, and be prepared to be there for up to a week.

Thanks, MrVicchio. I've never been in a direct-line hurricane before, so really have no idea what to do as far as evacuating, etc. I have never been a "plan ahead" kinda gal. I didn't even buy extra toilet paper for Y2K.

Well, do yourself a favor, plan. It's just wise to have an ahead. If this thing were to turn in a monster storm, do you really want to be caught off guard.

Guess I should, huh? You are a Navy vet. Ever stationed at Kings Bay?

    Nah.

Great Lakes to Millington to Corpus Christi to Ingleside to Brunswick. Started out as an Air Traffic Controller ended up an Aerographer's Mate (Weatherman).

Interesting. I've always been interested in meteorology. If I weren't so old already I'd probably go into that field. Thanks for the tips!

Trying to get into ATC myself, civilian side. Too bad the FAA is such a mess right now.

Irene has made it to Cat 1 now, forecasts show it going up the east coast or possibly smashing right into Florida as a Cat 3.

Cat 3 is bad. It is not wise to try and ride out a Cat 3. Too early to tell exactly where it's going, but you guys down there should definitely be making plans!
