Lone profitable ACA insurance co-op losing millions - US News

Maine health insurance co-op suspends enrollment after reporting $17.2M loss so far this year

The lone health insurance cooperative to make money last year on the Affordable Care Act's public insurance exchanges is now losing millions and cutting off individual enrollment for 2016.

Maine's Community Health Options lost more than $17 million in the first nine months of this year, after making $10.9 million in the same period last year. A spokesman said higher-than-expected medical costs have hurt the cooperative.

I think not having people who turn in high claims not pay even a little more for their insurance is killing everyone else, including the insurers and other insureds. It's killing everyone BUT the people who are the cause of the cost.

Just to make sure I understand, you also complain that under the ACA people who access services are responsible for more of the cost of the services they consume (in the form of higher deductibles) correct? So those who use more services end up spending more than those who do not?

That seems to be the problem most people who hate the ACA have. It causes people to be responsible for their bills. Don't forget about that one thread with all the conservatives whining about millionaires on medicaid being forced to pay their bills. Never forget that thread.
