Girl, 12, busted for writing on desk

A New York City student has been arrested for doodling on her desk.

Twelve-year-old Alexa Gonzalez scribbled "Lex was here 2/1/10" on her desk at Junior High School 190 in Queens. She also wrote "I love my friends Abby and Faith."

Her mother, Moraima Tamacho, says Alexa was released several hours after she was taken in handcuffs to a police station.

Education department spokesman David Cantor said it "shouldn't have happened." Cantor says "common sense should prevail."

Last month, the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful arrests and assaults by school safety officers.

Alexa has been assigned eight hours of community service, a book report and an essay on what she's learned from the experience.

I'm still trying to understand why it was necessary to arrest her for something like this. As if law enforcement systems wasn't dumb enough already, this just made it even dumber.

Obviously her parents never taught her to respect other peoples property nor her fellow citizens who also use that desk so, I'm glad someone decided to do the job for the parents. I'm also glad it was the cops so that the school doesn't get sued.

You're right, in fact the NYPD should forget about all crimes that aren't considered felonies, because those are the real crimes and those other lesser nuisances just take up the cops time...

I saw this story. The ink used was totally washable. Unless the girl had somehow reacted totally outrageously when the school attempted to discipline her in the normal way, then I'd say this was beyond absurd.

Knowing schools these days, I'd guess they overreacted in their usual hysterical fashion.
