Seriously. This upcoming year it's going to be - 40 bucks a month?

That means little enough to me, but multiplied by every service member it means a good chunk for the DOD. Give me an HSA, too, while we're at it.

I didn't get a raise this year :(

However, I am going on some sort of performance bonus program where I will get a bonus on stuff like plant productivity, safety, and raw material yield%. All stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with my job.

sounds to me like a potentially good program. that assumes management opens the books to the employees so that you are able to monitor trends in productivity, safety and materiel efficiency. nucor uses a similar program to reward its employees. this gives the staff a stake, something more than a salary, in the business' outcomes

and there is nothing which prevents the OP from sending a check in the amount of the raise back to his employer

Oh, I am currently looking at installing big TVs in the breakrooms to show that stuff, among other things like selected bits of the financials, production per man hour, absenteeism, etc.

In my opinion, the more people who know this type of information, the more proactive they are able to be.

and that public revelation motivates management to share the proceeds of good times with the employees as well as the cuts when evidence of business hardships are also evident

- as an aside - the NFL's refusal to expose its books is central to the present crisis in that industry

Absolutely, when I was an hourly, I credited management with knowing and doing more than I now know they were able. Break that wall down and people's expectations become more realistic.

Dude, from someone who works at a company that has those things, they are entirely worthless, moronic ways to waste money and time.

Edit: I know your intentions behind it are good and I know you will get praise from your supervisor but the vast majority of employees come to work to do their job, make money and go home.
They are not that interested in all the numbers like that.

I think it's somewhere around 10-20% of employees are those who would benefit from it.
Can't remember the statistic now.

actually, as a co-worker, if i see your actions as wasteful, you are then taking money (incentives) out of my pocket
because the company (now) shares the profits with me, i do not want to diminish those profits thru your waste
that causes me to become vocal with you about those things which are detrimental to earning a profit
without such incentives - and the data to allow me to monitor company trends - i would likely instead stay silent while your wasteful co-worker practices diminished the company's profitability

and yes, there are some employees who don't care, and are not motivated to enhance profitability
we can easily identify them because they tend to be the most vocal when raises/bonuses are not being handed out

There is actually statistical evidence that most people just don't give a rats ass.
Most factory laborers have a hard time translating greater efficiency to great income from profit sharing.

The best way to motivate a basic employee base is through the supervisors and their floor team.

[my emphasis added to your post] please post the stats which will show that open book incentives don't work

That's the thing, I found this statistic at work, during a presentation.

It's funny that they don't put 2 and 2 together, I'll see if I can find an internet link for it though.

In the end its a cultural thing. What you do is give a reason for those who do care to achieve social dominance and they will browbeat their fellow workers into playing along. I have seen it happen before.

But I am not installing that stuff to get praise, I am installing it because the plant manager asked me to.

I know what you mean, just my opinion and observation, but the best way to achieve good production is direct cash payments and a solid floor management team.

But I am not installing that stuff to get praise, I am installing it because the plant manager asked me to.

I hope you don't think I was trying to insinuate that you were brown nosing or anything.
Was just saying that if it furthers your career, it's good to do it.

Even though its only 40 bucks a month I am sure that every soldier, marine, airman, coast guardsman and semen feel that they deserve that extra 40 bucks a month. Thats a part of a car insurance payment, a couple cases of beer or more, some extra money being paid towards utilities or something else to many people in the military.

deserve is not the same as 'should get'. lots of guys in the service deserve more than they get; you don't come here for the money or the education and if you did, then you're in the wrong place.

 but how about all E4's and below keep their raise, and E5's and above help out?

I will gladly take your 40 bucks a month Sgt. =)

This is one area we lack. Partially because we have grown our processes organically and they are not well aligned and can be confusing. We just hired a process engineer to sort that mess out. The other major issue is a lack of training for our supervision staff.

I hope you don't think I was trying to insinuate that you were brown nosing or anything.

Oh I know. I tend to do a lot of projects because they need to be done and they will make a positive difference in the org (and a lot of time basic stuff that should have been done ages ago like getting our process spec info in our ERP system instead of an old kludgy access database (thats my big project for the next month or two, because its stupid not to do) (next project will probably be getting a better standard costing system built, yay I get to be an accountant for three months (welcome to IT))), not because I am told to. This one though was one I was told to do. (I was told to do the costing one, but that hasn't kicked off yet)

In these straitened times, any patriotic soldier who earns enough to save money should give up those savings as he's obviously being paid more than he needs for daily living...

The funny thing is we let the free market dictate military pay, they would get blackwater sized paychecks.
