I am surprised that the reception station at FT Benning still looks the same.

Deers in the head lights...

Thought you guys might enjoy this photo spread on an enlistee's 2 year stint in the army...

Captured Photo Collection Ian Fisher : American Soldier Photos

He always repeat "I love my country and that's why I want to join the army"...that's alright, but there are thousands of ways to be at the service of your country without joining the army! What made him choose the army and not a politician carreer for example?

Furthermore, do you think that a boy who is weeping and wants to go home is ready to fight? Look at this pic

What can a 19 y/o boy do in this situation? Do you really think he is mature enough to react correctly? What if he panicks?! What if he walks on a mine?!

For heavens sake! That is all so blatantly retarded, your sarcasm is biting today, isn't it?

I don't understand what's wrong with what I said. If you disagree, give arguments.

I said that

1) I find it a bit stupid to join the army if the only reason is that you love your country. There are many ways to do something useful for you country, the army is only one of them. The question is "why the army?".

2) I also think that 19 is really young to go to a battlefield. Not because he can't physically do it, but rather because I don't think that you're mature enough to do that. Maybe 25 would be more appropriate.

Probably a matter of his skills, opportunities, and values. For instance, unlike you, the pictorial notes that he's not a good student. That rules out a lot of opportunities.

19 year olds have been fighting wars for thousands of years, Bub. They seem to manage.

Then it's like the students who choose to study law because they suck at maths!

There have also been rapes for thousands of years, that doesn't mean that it's a good thing

If that's an analogy, I'm the Queen of England.

No, not really. The military is a good option for those who don't want to pursue higher education, but it's also a good option for those who do. I have had Soldiers with Master's degrees and higher. They serve because they love the job and love serving their country.

A pathetic analogy from a small mind.

19 year old Soldiers have been fighting wars since the dawn of man. We have Soldiers of all ages. The 25 year olds are ones we like to call "Sergeant" or "Lieutenant".

I find your snobby commentary annoying and unnecessary.

And, the military even offers a full-paid education as well, how do you think I am currently getting my Bachelors degree! :D

Awesome! I needed that GI bill when I was in school!

:doh

Seriously. What possible response is there to that one?

Admitting that I'm right?

I was just saying that with that motive ("I want to serve my country") you could also justify being a policeman, a fireman, a doctor, a scientist, a politician, a businessman, a worker in a factory...all these jobs are as necessary as the army

A pathetic analogy from a small mind.

What don't you understand? It's not because sometimes has always been done that it's a good thing

I guess you're against kids under 18 taking arms and fighting. I'm like you, but I think that people who are 19 or 20 are still too young.

good for you, but do you find it normal that you have to risk being killed in order to get some education (or to get the US citizenship)?

Risk ME being killed? Why sir, It is our enemies that risk being killed!

Seriously though, I am blessed to even be in an country that even allows me to recieve an education. I think that's worth fighting for.

Of course but it would be even better if everyone was allowed to receive education

And it would be nice if porn stars rode around on Unicorns. Life isn't free.

You live in Europe, right?

It's a society choice, there are many ways to redistribute money. I think that education should be one of the top 3 priorities for any government.

And yes I live in an European country where you can get a bachelor's degree for around 1,000$ (much less if your parents are jobless)

I guess so, but I'd rather actually see what it feels like to actually earn my right to an education. You know, to see and experience what all our forefathers(well...at least mine, my family has been in every war since 1776, baby!) had to pay for all of us to enjoy what we have today.

There is something numb about just having my entire college paid for without feeling like I've actually done something to deserve it. Call me crazy :/
