Actually makes sense. If we're going to officially open up combat roles to women, then women should also be subject to the draft. However, I'm not sure that either are the right choice regarding military readiness and/or combat efficiency.

U.S. military generals want women to register for draft

(CNN)—Two of the U.S. military service chiefs believe women should now be required to register for the draft after the Defense Department opened up all combat jobs to women.

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley agreed that the current policy, which requires only males register for the Selective Service System, should be changed after restrictions that barred women from trying out for combat jobs were lifted last year.

"Every American who's physically qualified should register for the draft," said Neller at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Tuesday that examined the new policy to admit women into combat units.

"I think that all eligible and qualified men and women should register for the draft," Milley added.

This is bull****. End the ****ing practice of forcing people to sign up. Why is this so hard?

END THE ****ING DRAFT! The draft is a clear violation of the thirteenth amendment.

There is no merit to the idea that we should expand a clearly unconstitutional act to women.

The vast majority of both men and women have no interest in serving. Respect that.

While I agree completely with you that the draft should be illegal, IF we are going to require people to register for it then everyone should have to. Just as I believe the government shouldn't be involved in marriage, IF it is going to be involved then it has to treat all of us equally under the law.

I really do not want to see young women be forced to do what young men are today. You end unjust practices, not expand them. If you however can't end them then you still do not expand them.

I don't see it as expanding, though. It isn't like MORE people would be drafted as a result of this. It would just increase the size of the pool, thus reducing the odds that any particular person would be selected. Perhaps that is my own selfishness, being a father of two boys.

Nobody should be forced to register for a draft that is supposedly non-existent. However, if our sons are forced to do so by law, then our daughters should also register. I've always been appalled by the inequity of how young men are singled out as "fodder" for a future crisis so they can be quickly gathered up and sent into harm's way, but half of our population is given a pass.

Equality is great when we are talking about good ideas, but we are talking about an idea that should be abolished you should aim to limit it's effects. Yes, I know, it's not fair according to some men that only young men have to sign up, but expanding it to wommen for "equality" only makes things worse. When you're all said and done expanding the system to women now you have another half of the population as part of the unjust system. That is not success, that is not progress towards ending the practice or even challenging it, but regression and failure.

There is a legitimate reason to not have women sign up for the draft. It comes down to seeing an increase in unwanted babies due to women have a get out of duty free card in their ability to get pregnant. And putting them in anyways but just in certain stateside billets will still make it unfair for men.

Honestly we should just do away with the mandatory draft registration and rather provide some incentive for men and women to volunteer to have their names in a draft for some benefit. Then if a woman or man was drafted but didn't serve within a fixed number of years, they could lose/be expected to pay back those benefits.

Women want equal rights to perform any function within the the military?

Good for you Jane......... now get get your pretty ass over there and register!

If, heaven forbid, there is ever another draft, I hope women will be drafted too.

To be fair, not all women want that. I imagine most women don't really care. It was pretty much done for political goals that revolve around ill advised feminist beliefs.

They should be sacked as cowards.

No real man would want women doing his fighting for him. And only a complete degenerate would force a woman to fight for him.

They are making a point..............relax pards.

If the women really think they can be Delta Force & Navy Seals.............they aught to get there asses over and register................ just like the boys.

The generals know they wont do it when push comes to shove.

You and I both agree that it is not acceptable for women to be in combat.

Some of us have no issue with signing up for a draft (since some of us volunteered to serve already), but just like with men, a good portion of the population doesn't want to do military duty.

I think it's silly for them to bother with the draft in general. For one: it's an empty effort seeing as how things would have to be dire AND Congress would have to reenact the draft, officially. Having an ongoing draft list like they do at this moment is droll. Generations have been signing up on it and of course we're not going to be using it anytime soon.

But since MOST women wouldn't qualify for military service and be able to make it through the most basic requirements it's really more of a complete waste of time and effort. Less than half of men don't qualify - but more than half of women wouldn't qualify straight from the start.

Again..................there is no draft. Do you have any idea what the difference is between a draft, and registering?

no draft for either sex. getting rid of it was a good idea.

It was. Requiring boys to continue to register as an emergency "fodder fuel", not so much. Registration should be ditched as well.

Again..................there is no draft. Do you have any idea what the difference is between a draft, and registering?

Yes - I think we're all aware there is no active draft going on at this present moment in time and that people are only required to register and be put into the draft queue - when and if they decide to drum up a draft . . . and so on, so forth.

Yes. We all know how it works.

And we're addressing the greater concept of the draft and what it means, here which is not reliant on having an active draft in momentum. [I didn't think this needed explaining at all.]

I don't get why they are equalizing the genders for a draft that supposedly doesn't exist anymore. What kind of meaningless double talk is this?

Given the number of optional wars we are fighting these days, mostly over capital gains, I would be doubly against the draft now. I don't trust our government to wage "just wars" anymore than I trust it to tell us the truthful reasons for going to war. It's all bull****. If they want people to kill for them, they can look for volunteers. I'd rather go to prison than kill for these psychopaths.

As long as registration for the draft exists, so to does the draft. The fact that they want to expand the pool for this non-existent draft only pushes the point home that the draft still exists.
