BATH, Maine – The largest destroyer ever built for the U.S. Navy headed out to sea for the first time Monday, departing from shipbuilder Bath Iron Works and carefully navigating the winding Kennebec River before reaching the open ocean where the ship will undergo sea trials.

More than 200 shipbuilders, sailors and residents gathered to watch as the futuristic 600-foot, 15,000-ton USS Zumwalt glided past Fort Popham, accompanied by tugboats.

Kelley Campana, a Bath Iron Works employee, said she had goose bumps and tears in her eyes.

"This is pretty exciting. It's a great day to be a shipbuilder and to be an American," she said. "It's the first in its class. There's never been anything like it. It looks like the future."
This is very cool, and the bow is very interesting.

I would think the visibility would be an issue if some of the electronics were down.

I suspect, the backups have backups, as well as there is likely some old optics aboard as well.
I wonder if that is the one with the rail gun?

It may be the largest, but it is the technology on that boat that will give opposition naval forces a headache to defend against. This thing has radar stealth capability, amazing advanced gun and weapons capability, long range accurate scanning ability, and a series of systems redundancies for self-protections.

I'd have to go find the article as it was a bit old but the idea was a fast, quiet, and hard to detect ship that could get behind enemy naval groups or close to enemy coastlines, and strike them all before anyone in the party knew what the hell happened.

All I have read on this boat is impressive, even if only half of it ends up being true.

Armament:
20 × MK 57 VLS modules, with a total of 80 launch cells[7]

RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM), 4 per cell

Tactical Tomahawk, 1 per cell

Vertical Launch Anti-Submarine Rocket (ASROC), 1 per cell

2 × 155 mm/62 caliber Advanced Gun System; 920 × 155 mm rounds, 70–100 LRLAP rounds

2 × 30 mm Mk 46 Mod 2 Gun Weapon System[8]

this boat is a killer....pure and simple

The original intent was for it to be a land target killer, not a boat killer.

Looking back to the original requirements almost 20 years ago it was supposed to have 128 VLS cells primarily for land-attack weapons and 1,500 rounds of LRLAP ammunition.

Oooooohhhhh rail gun.

Let's go deer hunting!

With the high level of technology on the USS Zumwalt, they had to pick the right captain -- James Kirk

No abm, no integrated CnC and a extremely limited vls.

Looks scary though.

I'm sure it's plenty capable in the weapons department.

It's the sea keeping ability that would concern me

Sea keeping won't be the concern - damaged stability would be.

Hope it works out well. It was expensive, and its ugly lol

I suppose it's comparable to a modern fighter... naturally unstable, but through the wonders of modern technology i.e computers, it can maintain it's balance.

Like you said, this may be an issue if that system fails in bad weather.

When things go pete tong on a fighter there is only one or two men to worry about getting out safely. A bit more challenging on a ship with over 100 crew.

As long as she has a good keel in her she will be quite stable.

This thing better be INCREDIBLY stealthy. Because otherwise, it is a waste of money, imo.

It cost almost twice as much as an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. And other then being stealthy, what can it do that the Burke's cannot?

It carries FEWER missiles then the Burke's. Though it does have a better radar. Ohhh...and it can shoot 155mm projectiles about 85 miles (the Burke's fire 5" projectiles about 14 miles).

So...much stealthier, a better radar and a much better main gun...for almost twice the cost.

And what can you do with this main gun? Well, shore bombardment and that is about it. Unless this thing is perfectly stealthy, there is no way it could get into firing range against a modern surface ship at sea without getting pummelled with anti-ship missiles.
And being able to fire inland about 85 miles is nice...but that is worth almost 4 billion dollars? Hardly.

And this bloated whale of a destroyer cost $22 billion so far in development costs...that is more then two brand new Gerald Ford class aircraft carriers.

It looks impressive, but the Navy has already said that they are only going to build 3 at most (originally they were going to build 32). Sounds like they came to their senses....too late.

All it has is stealth and the fancy gun (the radar was already being developed for the new Gerald Ford class aircraft carriers). And both of these (to varying extents) could have been incorporated into a new class of destroyers to replace the Arleigh Burke's - but not at the colossal size of the Zumwalt (which weighs not far from twice as much as an Arleigh Burke).

And those of you that are in love with this thing, save it. I do not care what your argument is, these ships are bloated whales...period. And the fact the Navy has severely curtailed construction of them proves my point.

Hope it's better than the POS tin can I was on...

Man I wish I could have been there...

The weight is very low down in this ship, which should help keep her stable.

Lets hope the naval architects have got this one right, peoples lives are at stake, not just money.

The DDG-51 is an open ocean Cold War battle group escort, a category of warship which we now possess in surplus.

The Zumwalt's were designed primarily for littoral warfare - to operate and survive near hostile shores.
