Obama's Drone War

Whistleblowers have released documents showing that Obama's drone strikes on terrorists have killed a whole lot of people who were not terrorsts.... ie, women and children.

You wonder why they hate us? Here is the reason. We have been doing this for decades, and have earned much of that hate they have for us. Obama not only went back on his promise to be much different than Bush. Obama became Bush on steroids. Many in this forum have known me for being one of the biggest Bush bashers here when he was in office. However, I make no distinction between Republicans (who are freakin' nuts) and Democrats (who are trying to catch up). There are assholes in both parties.

Obama is guilty. The CIA is in charge of the drone program and the thousands and thousands of Private Military Contractors. How many ISIL are we paying to de-stabilize Syria? Drones are like Private Military Contractors(Mercenaries) and what's the difference. Anything you allow the CIA to do immediately disappears from the Media because the National Secrets Act is always used to hide embarrassments, screw ups, illegalities, deaths, torture, etc. I didn't vote for Obama, but I thought he might be a breath of fresh air. I'm a Green, so I guess I'm just too optimistic.

I've spoken out often against Obama's drone war using the same argument you did above, but the difference between Obama and Bush is quite literally like that between a molehill and a mountain. Obama's killed hundreds of innocents, but in Bush's invasion and the insurgency that came afterwards, over 100K innocent Iraqi men, women, and children died. He destabilized the entire region, and it's for good reason that it's said that Iran was the only winner since they now effectively control both Iran and Iraq.

Truly, Obama's actions are the molehill compared to Bush's mountain.

Drone bombing is pretty bad, but we don't care. Whatever we need to do in order to keep the Infinity War going. Who cares about civilians.

There is only one thing the drone war is all about:

He's worse than Bush on the anti-terror front.

Terrible policy. Drones are not accurate and Obama has been lying about their accuracy and effectiveness. These drone strikes are serving as the same recruitment tools as the torture and Abu Ghraib did during Bush. We have to pull out of the Middle East completely. It's not our business to be involved there. The Middle East is where empires go to die.

"just as treasonous, just as criminal"? Would you like to show that Reagan's actions were any less criminal than Obama's? If you'll think about it, every single president in American history (with the possible exception of the one who died not so long after coming in office) has innocent blood on his hands, so if you're going to claim that Obama's "just as treasonous, just as criminal", then you've got to include Reagan, Nixon, LBJ, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman...go all the way back to Washington himself.

So you have to ask yourself if claiming that molehill is equal to that mountain is really an intelligent claim to make...or if maybe, just maybe you should hold the ones who build a mountain of corpses more accountable than the one with the relative molehill thereof.

I'm happy to include all the others, and I agree with what you say. I would like to give a pass to Ike and JFK, because at least they had the courage to speak publically about the issues, Ike with his Farewell Address, JFK with his outspoken criticism of the CIA.

After all, "molehill" and "mountain" are merely figures of speech.

Ultimately, this will cost us even more in the future.

One thing that the propagandists have been good at doing in this region is showing how some Administrations rely upon weapons that are used at a distance (Tomahawk, Drone) is "cowardly", and that the US "does not have the courage" to face such groups on the ground simply encourages more to join their organizations.

During the Clinton Administration, the US conducted a lot of Cruise Missile strikes, and this emboldened groups like al-Qaeda because they thought we would do nothing to them to place "American live in danger". They could do almost anything they wanted, and at most we would only make a few strikes which would ultimately do little damage.

Then when President Bush actually flooded the region with combat troops, it rocked them to their cores. Such groups were largely eliminated, only a shell of what they had been a few years before. Recruitment was down, land controlled by them was down drastically, and the attacks by them were much smaller and at much higher cost to themselves. Now after 6 years of decreasing US presence on the ground and drone strikes on the rise, they are adding more recruits and expanding their territory once again.

Drone strikes have their place, do not get me wrong. But they are no substitute for "boots on the ground" to take territory away from these people and reducing the amount of land and people they have to conduct further operations.

And this is nothing new. After Vietnam, we had the same issue after attacks on US ships (both military and commercial), as well as similar actions during the Carter and early Reagan administrations. Many thought President Reagan was "weak", because of his use of naval artillery in Lebanon. We fire huge artillery shells from 20 miles away, because we would not put our people at risk, then when the Barracks was blown up, we turned tail and ran away.

Sadly, to some people the only solution seems to be "kill them all", because they do not think and reason like most people do. Anything other then total destruction is weakness, and negotiation is weakness as well (because the strong do not need to negotiate, they just take what they want).
