"Lost in the inaugural hullabaloo was Tuesday’s news that President Obama has relieved Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis, the colorful and highly decorated Marine who’s been in charge of the crucial US Central Command, which oversees the various wars in the Middle East, since 2010."

General Mattis is not exactly a Perfumed Prince. He is a dedicated Marine to the hilt.

Which is probably why Obama deemed his services no longer necessary. Can't have real fighting men making decisions about... you know, fighting...

A pity they don't have any more generals.

Perhaps he disagreed with making changes to physical fitness standards to allow more women into combat positions. He may have actually believed in looking for a few good men, instead of just many OK people. ;)

Would that be this 'firing':

CENTCOM General James Mattis To Retire From Marine Corps | The Duffel Blog

I could believe the New York Post and right wing blogs or I could believe 'The American military's most trusted news source' .

Hmmm.....tough decision. Especially since the Duffel Blog has numerous quotes from the General on why he is retiring and the New York Post has.......nothing from him.

You guys really are fun.

i've shared a few gallons of coffee with the man, serving with him twice in my career.

helluva Marine, a very intelligent guy to boot... the kind which are no longer appreciated by civilian leadership ( not that his sort was ever really appreciated by civilian leadership)

he certainly not the kind that the faint of heart or the weak of will will get along with.

Happy Trails , Chaos
Hammer, Out.

Know a lot of detail about the man's record, do you guys?

Did either of you even know the man's name before this article?

Every time I read one of these threads, I think of Pavlov's dogs. The right wing media rings a bell and they all start to salivate.

More than you probably think. One of my good friends is a Devil Dog, and likes to talk about the Corps.

So is the General lying in the Duffel story or is the New York Post lying?

on the question of him being relieved or him retiring?.... both are true.

he spoke with SECDEF about the details of his departure months ago.

Yet there's not a single quote from him in the Duffle article about him being 'fired'. And this is an article that contains numerous quotes from him. Curious.

I think I choose to belive the General and to consider the right wing accounts of Obama firing him to be just so much bull****.

I highly doubt you care one bit about the General... everything is just a left v right battle with your ilk.

Why should I care about him any more than I care about any other human being - does he care about me? I don't know him. He may be a great guy, he may be a jerk.

It is ironic that you choose to rail about left v. right, when the entire purpose of this thread, beginning with the first post, was an attack on the President by accusing him of 'firing' a General he didn't like, without a single shred of proof.

When I post an article giving the General's own reasons for retiring, that's somehow a 'left' wing attack?

I think we know where the partisanship lies in this thread. And with you. The difference between us is that I choose to believe the General. You choose to believe right wing rags like the Post and right wing blogs.

The date of the linked article is 27 APRIL 2012 , Mattis intended to retire in April of this year. He was summaril relieved of command this month. Being relieved of command is the same as getting fired.

you are being intentionally dishonest.

there is only one person in this thread who has posted partisan posts.. and that is you... no one else.
you are the only one to blather about the right wing this and right wing that.

I said nothing partisan ( besides pointing out , accurately, that you are posing this as a left v right issue).. I have called nothing a "left wing attack"... you are making things up and letting your dishonest ways get the better of you again.

yes, I know you don't care about the guy.. you don't know **** about him.... your purpose here is to start/wage yet another left v right battle..seemingly, that's your only purpose on the forum.

Yeah, I'm willing to let the readers of this forum judge who's being partisan and who isn't.

The title of the thread is 'Marine Corps General Fired'. Followed by posts made by right wing posters about how terrible the President is for firing this general. It's so typical of you right wing types. A general or an admiral retires or resigns, and suddenly 'he was fired by Obama!'

This whole thread was a right wing attack on the President, using a headline in a right wing rag as the basis of the thread.

In fact the General - who you seem to consider a personal friend - retired and is quoted extensively in the link I posted, detailing why he was retiring.

Yet you don't post a single comment about the lies contained in the first article and subsequent posts. I wonder why that is?

I especially enjoyed the post by the 'Global Moderator', once again displaying his grasp of the facts.

Ring! Ring! That's the right wing bell ringing. Time for you guys to salivate!

Didn't answer the question. I have a few Jarhaid friends too, doesn't make me very well informed on all their Generals. hell the whole time I was in the Army I actually spoke to only one General, a Brit at that. Most the time my view of generals was from a looong ways away while on parade for Organizational Day. Then again I wasn't in the rear with the gear either.

this general has been gonna retire since 2010, a series of unforseeable circumstances kept him around.

You know the days of the Crotch are ending when they have only one ahhhh blunt General on the 'For Duty' roles....

I forsee a long life yet for the Corps... :)

I spent three years of my life on an amphibious assault ship with 600 Marines. Of course I never got to 'have coffee' with a general, either.

no, being relieved of command is not necessarily the same thing as getting fired... it can be, or it can simply be a change of command.

if you are wondering why i post something, or why i don't post something.. just ask.

in this particular case, i didn't post anything about "lies" because i didn't read the article... I didn't have to... i've known for months he was going to retire.
